Brady Bacon – Cali Bound!

(Bill W) May 25, 2015 – Brady Bacon is California bound after a busy week racing in Indiana and Ohio. What was to be six races became four with bookend dates with USAC at Terre Haute Wednesday, and tonight’s event with the World of Outlaws in Lawrenceburg rained out. This weekend the Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver will have one event with the wing and one without. On Friday, he’ll be at Kings Speedway in Hanford for the 360 “King of Kings”, and on Thursday, it will be on to the Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare with the USAC West Coast 360 sprints. Both nights will be spent aboard the Josh Ford #73.

Last Thursday found Brady with a new Silver Crown team. He timed in 11th quick in the Paul Martens #48 at the “Hoosier Hundred” at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. “The track changed a lot from the last bit of hot laps to qualifying,” he says. “When we went out, we were late. I had never been there, and didn’t know how hard to run it. I was a little too conservative.”

Brady would have a good ride in the 100-lapper on the mile. “We had a really good car,” he says. “We weren’t that great at the beginning, but it got better and better as we went. Unfortunately, I used a little too much tire in the middle of the race, and at the end, when the car was really good, we didn’t have the tire to do anything. We had a shot at third, fourth or fifth, but blew a tire on the last lap.”

The tenth place outing was a good start for the team. “It was kind of growing pains,” says Brady. “It was the first time for me and the first time for the team. We should be better next time (Terre Haute on July 2). I was pleased with how everyone did. We had some growing pains, but we’re capable of going for wins with this team.”

The next three nights were spent aboard his own #99 in All Star competition. On Thursday, he was 12th quick at the Plymouth Speedway in Indiana. “Qualifying was a little dusty and one-lane,” says Brady. “The track was tilled and watered for the heats, which made it more racy. We were able to get to fourth (from sixth).”

Brady settled in for a 14th place finish in the feature. “It was single-file around the bottom,” he says. “There wasn’t anything to hold onto up top. The dirt from the infield was being thrown up the track, so it was follow the leader. The top was never clean enough to run.”

It was on to Fremont Speedway in Ohio on Saturday. Brady registered the quickest time of the night, but struggled in his heat. “It was really dry on Saturday,” he says. “We got a really good lap in…I think we were three or four-tenths faster than anyone else. It was super-slick. I had to run the B. We ran second to Dale (Blaney), idling around the bottom pretty much.”

Starting 22nd, he would pull off early in the main event. “I was able to get by a few cars on the top to start the feature,” says Brady. “It started laying rubber, so I got shuffled back. At that point, I decided I had enough. Fortunately, I did that, because there was a big crash with all the cars in front of me right after I did.”

Things went better in Sunday’s event at Fremont. “We went out towards the end and we were still fifth quick,” says Brady. “If I could get as good at the end of the night as the beginning at Fremont, we would be in good shape.”

Starting fourth in his heat, Brady would checker second. He would then win the Dash from outside row one. Starting from the pole of the feature, he would checker in eighth place. “The first ten laps of the feature, we were pretty good,” he says. “It’s like Deja-vu every time at Fremont. The first ten laps, I’m pretty good. The next ten, I’m slowing down…the next ten, I’m really slowing down, and the last ten, I’m just slow. I’ve got a little work to do when it gets super-slick. We slowed down two seconds over the course of the feature, so that is a lot. To run up front there at all is tough at Fremont. We’re getting closer.”
