Wagner Scores First Career All Star Victory

09/07/2001:
FREMONT, OH - Mike Wagner captured his first career All Star win
Friday night at Fremont Speedway in the 40-lap feature sponsored by TW
Metals. Wagner took advantage of a spin by race leader Dean Jacobs and held
off Byron Reed to secure the $5,000 payday. He also had to survive a heat
race flip and transfer to the feature via the B Main.
Wagner was aboard Hoosier tires with a Hershey engine under the hood. "I
saw Dean on the top groove and it was fast so I stayed on top. I just tried
to stay out of lapped traffic," an elated Wagner recalled. He also thanked
his crew for their hard work and his sponsors Clugston Lumber Company and
Ott Brothers Furniture.
Phil Gressman started on the ButlerBuilt Hot Seat pole with Kenny Jacobs
alongside. Wagner and Butch Schroeder made up row two for the green which
saw K. Jacobs grab the lead over Wagner. Wagner made his move during lap
two, diving under the leader coming off turn four to lead lap three. Wagner
began pulling away from K. Jacobs with Butch Schroeder third and Phil
Gressman fourth. D. Jacobs took third on lap 13 and was running there when
the first caution flew on lap 18 when Todd Kane and Travis Rilat collided in
turn three.
Wagner kept the lead for the restart and D. Jacobs took second from his
brother on lap 19 and began pressuring Wagner. D. Jacobs rode high around
Wagner going down the backstretch to lead lap 22, with Reed now third after
starting seventh. Reed began pressuring Wagner for second, but could not get
by after running alongside Wagner for a pair of laps. Schroeder brought out
a caution on lap 26 when he collided with another car and lost his front
wing, dropping him out of sixth spot. D. Jacobs still led, and Wagner kept
Reed at bay as the laps ticked down. Lap 37 was the demise of D. Jacobs as
he executed a solo spin in turn three, handing the lead to Wagner as the
caution came out. The order was now Wagner, Reed, K. Jacobs, Wilson, Eric
Hysong and Kemenah when the green reappeared. K. Jacobs shot past Reed
going down the backstretch, and Reed drove hard into turn three, running
into the back of K. Jacobs and sending Jacobs spinning, collecting Hysong
and John Ivy for another yellow. Only Hysong was able to continue. There
were still three laps remaining, and Wagner led them, holding off Reed and
Wilson. Kemenah finished fourth with Chad Jones fifth after starting 14th.
Danny Smith was sixth ahead of Joe Gaerte, Gressman, Ed Lynch Jr. and D.
Jacobs.
"Lapped cars were in there and I just ran out of room," was Reed's
explanation of his bumping into K. Jacobs.
Kemenah's finish and K. Jacobs 18th place finish keeps Kemenah in the
points lead by 41 points.
The K-T Equipment heat went to Danny Smith, the JB Enterprise Racing
Products heat to Travis Rilat, the Crown Battery heat to Joe Gaerte and the
Engler Machine & Tool heat fell to Missouri's Chad Jones. Wagner won the B
Main while Smith captured the $200-to-winTW Metals Dash. Greg Wilson earned
$200 for fast time, courtesy of a race fan who also put up $100 for second
quick time and $100 each to the 5th, 6th and 7th place finishers in the B
Main. A rain shower hit the track at 7:10 p.m. after 15 cars had time
trialed, causing time trials to be completely restarted after an hour and a
half delay. Wagner hopped a wheel and took an easy flip in his heat. He was
okay.
John Rhoads of Fremont captured his second career dirt truck feature win over his Bobby's Truck Repair teammate Bobby Davis, Steve Sabo, Dan Roepke and Jay Boyd.
