Reed tunes up for Speedweek; Scott wins 6th; Sebetto is third first time winner in trucks
06/30/2001:
FREMONT, Oh. (June 30, 2001) - Byron Reed tuned up for the All Star Circuit of Champions 19th Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek by scoring his second win of the season at Fremont Speedway Saturday.
Bettsville, Ohio's David Harrison passed Kelly Kinser, who was aboard the Nickles Brothers' #31 two laps into the 30-lap feature to take the lead. Action stopped on lap three for a Bobby Teeple flip. On the restar, Harrison checked out fromt he field. Action was again halted on lap 6 when Mark Keegan of Fremont spun in turn two and Whitehouse, Ohio's Todd Heller had no place to go and flipped hard. He was alright, but the Fremont Speedway points leader was done for the night.
On the restart, Harrison's car would not fire, as the Harrison Trucking #44 experienced magneto problems. That gave the lead to Kinser, who was soon passed by John "Poison" Ivy." Reed, who started fifth, made his move coming out of turn 2 and was never challenged the rest of the way for his second victory of the season at "The Track That Action Built."
"We've had a really good car the last couple of weeks, the driver has just screwed up," said Reed, of Monclova, Ohio. "Hopefully we have everything ready now for Speedweek."
Behind Reed were Ivy, Kinser, Boston Reid, Alvin Roepke, Phil Gressman, who started 15th, fast qualifier John Wisbon, Jody Keegan, Mike Linder, who started 18th, and Troy Vaccaro.
Heat wins went to Linder, Reid, Gressman and Reed.
In the 305 sprint feature, early leader Clint Laux of Norwalk, Ohio, spun in turn two, handing the lead to Ed Psuerny of Columbus, who promptly spun while leading in turn two. Meanwhile, Bryan Scott was working his way to the front from his 14th starting position.
Scott, of Castalia, Ohio, took his sixth checkered flag of the season at Fremont, ahead of Fremont's Lee Potter, Bucyrus, Ohio's Brock Mayes, Fremont's Shawn Chaney and Gibsonburg, Ohio's Craig Mintz.
Scoring 305 sprint heat wins were Mark Lang of Fostoria, Laux and Chaney.
The dirt truck feature was exciting, as Fremont's Brian Sebetto and Jeff Dougherty were side by side coming down for the checkered. Sebetto edged Doughterty by a nose to score his first career feature win at Fremont Speedway. Sebetto is the third straight first time winner in the dirt trucks.
Fremont Speedway will host the third leg of the All Star Circuit of Champions Ohio Sprint Speedweek - 7 straight days of racing across the state - on Tuesday, July 3.
