FREMONT, Ohio – Dean Jacobs has been so close to finding victory lane this year. The Wooster, Ohio driver finally found it at Fremont Speedway Saturday, July 3 in the make-up feature from Crown Battery Night, handing car owners Joe and Diane Seeling their first 410 sprint victory. Not to be outdone, Chris Andrews may have salvaged his season as the Sandusky, Ohio driver won the regular 410 sprint feature on McDonald’s Night.

Jimmy Colvin, 17, held looked like a seasoned-pro, hitting his marks every lap to score his first career victory at the Track That Action Built in the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprints.

The two features – a make-up from the Crown Battery Night and the regular show on McDonald’s Night – featured some great side-by-side racing in the Fremont Fence Dirt Trucks. Castalia, Ohio’s Dan Hennig would battle all 20 laps of the first feature with Jimmy McGrath Jr. before securing his second win of the season. In the second feature, McGrath battled with Kent Brewer, Hennig, Steve Endicott and Bob Dible before claiming his second win of the season.

In the first feature, Jacobs battled with Rob Chaney the last half of the race before driving under him exiting turn two on the white flag lap to take the lead. Jacobs would go on to earn his second career victory at Fremont.

“That was awesome. We started ninth there and I didn’t know…there were a lot of good cars in there. My hats off to Rich (Farmer, speedway promoter). This race track last week was a little rough. To come back this week and still have this good of a race track..phenominal. It was racy. You could just run the crap out of the car and that’s what racing is all about. It was really a blast,” said Jacobs beside his Northwest Towing and Recovery, NAPA Truck and Auto Center backed #97.

In the night’s regular 410 feature, Kevin Lee looked like he would score his first career victory. Leading laps 6 through 17. However, fast qualifier Andrews had other ideas, as he took second from Brandon Wimmer on lap 14 and then hunted down and passed Lee for the lead on the bottom of turn four on lap 18. Andrews would hit lapped traffic with 10 laps to go, allowing Craig Mintz to close. As Andrews took the white flag, Mintz was on his rear bumper. Andrews would run the bottom groove of turns three and four and won the drag race to the checkered for his third career Fremont victory.

For Andrews, who won the track championship last year at Attica Raceway Park, 2010 has been a struggle to say the least.

“I’ve been through hell all year… I don’t know what I did to upset God. But, my crew didn’t give up; they kept working and kept trying to keep me positive. We started to turn things around during Speedweek, slowly but surely and then we had a good run last night (at Attica) and then to win here. I normally don’t run good on this type of track when it slicks off, but the car felt good on the bottom,” said Andrews beside his Lucas Oil, K&N Filters, Goofy Golf backed #15c.

In the 305 sprint feature, Colvin, who started his sprint racing career on asphalt, used the low groove and kept the car under him, taking the lead from Dustin Stroup on lap five. A couple of cautions on laps 10 and 11 allowed Stroup a couple of shots at Colvin, but he didn’t panic and stayed on the bottom and went on to the win.

“I drove it as hard as I could but had to be patient and found some moisture down low,” said Colvin beside his Conceal Carry Classes, G&C Construction Greber Custom Powder Coating backed #9. “I have to thank my mom for drawing the good pills the last few weeks and for videotaping every week. Have to thank my dad and Grandpa Moyer and everyone who helps out. We got upside down last week and that meant a lot of time in the shop.

In the first dirt truck feature, McGrath Jr. and Hennig would wage a torrid battle throughout the event. When McGrath bobbled in turn three on lap 12, Hennig was there to pounce into the lead. A couple of cautions on laps 14 and 15 gave McGrath a couple of shots at Hennig, but he was able to hang on for his sixth career Fremont victory.

“I was just waiting for him to make a mistake and take over. Last year I tried to go for more wins and it cost me…we decided to be more consistent and patient this year and it’s paying off,” said Hennig beside his Liberty Tax Service, Riedy’s Auto World, Haunted Hydro, Level Performance and Innovative Graphics backed #32H. 

In the regular truck feature, McGrath Jr. grabbed the early lead, only to watch Kent Brewer steal it away on lap 3. The racing from first through fourth was fantastic between Brewer, McGrath Jr., Hennig and Steve Endicott. McGrath would driver around Brewer into the lead on lap 12, and then had to survive five cautions over the last eight laps to score the victory.

“I was pretty pleased with how the truck responded to the high side, it just kept getting better and better,” said McGrath beside his Winesburg Barbecue, B&K Auto Service, J&F Miller Farms, Tower Driving Academy backed #5jr.

In the first 410 feature, rookie Shawn Valenti jumped into the early lead with Bryan Sebetto, Jody Keegan, Phil Gressman, Rob Chaney and Dean Jacobs in tow. Sebetto would drive under Valenti into the lead on lap three and hit set a blistering pace, hitting lapped traffic by the sixth circuit. Gressman would take second from Valenti on lap 17 and began to close on Sebetto.

Disaster struck for the two top cars on lap 12, when the caution flew for a stalled Caleb Helms. As Sebetto took the yellow, Gressman ran over the back of his car and flipped on the front stretch. Gressman was done for the night, while Sebetto’s car suffered heavy damage to the top wing. On the restart, Sebetto’s wounded car only held the lead for one lap as Chaney and Jacobs drove by. On lap 14 Chaney and Jacobs ran nose to tail with Byron Reed and Lee Jacobs battling for third. 

As Chaney hit lapped traffic with 11 laps remaining, Jacobs kept applying pressure while Reed, Lee Jacobs, Kevin Lee, Valenti and Andrews raced hard behind them. Jacobs would use a lapped machine to drive under Chaney exiting turn two as they raced to the white flag. Jacobs would go on to take the win with Chaney, Reed, Jacobs and Lee rounding out the top five.

“I got to running in the middle in turns one and two…there was a brown spot there that was good. I was really good on the bottom. I heard his guys tell him (Chaney) once he got into the lead to get up top and let’er eat and I knew I could beat him if he did that and it just worked out,” added Jacobs in the Engine Pro Victory Lane. “We’ve been really fast all year and just been snake bit every night. We’ve passed a million cars all year but just can’t get a win. My crew chief Matt…he’s pretty much doing this by himself, working his butt off. We did all nine nights of Speedweek and he pretty much did all the work himself.”

In the second feature, Brandon Wimmer would take the initial lead with Jody Keegan, Lee, Sebetto, Chaney, Mark Keegan and Andrews in line. A caution after the first lap for a Dean Jacobs spin would bunch up the field. Another lap and a caution for Byron Reed, as Sebetto drove around Lee into third. Sebetto would drive under Jody Keegan for second on lap three and just as he began pressuring Wimmer for the lead on lap 5 the caution flew for debris. During the yellow, Sebetto went pitside with a flat right rear tire, moving Lee into second ahead of Jody Keegan, Andrews, Mark Keegan and Craig Mintz. On the restart, Lee would drive to the outside of Wimmer and take the lead with Andrews grabbing third from Jody Keegan. The action would grind to a halt on lap 7 for a David Harrison tip-over.

Lee would pull away on the restart with Wimmer and Andrews racing hard for second and Mintz right on their rear bumper. Andrews would dispose of Wimmer on lap 14, but had a lot of ground to make up to catch Lee. Andrews’ patience paid off as he pulled even with Lee on lap 17 while Mintz moved into third. Andrews shot off the bottom of turn four to take the lad on lap 18. As Andrews hit lapped traffic by lap 20, Mintz drove under Lee for second and began to close on Andrews. Andrews was patient with the lapped machines…maybe a little too patient, as Mintz closed quickly. 

With five laps remaining, Mintz was within two car lengths of Andrews with Lee comfortably in third and Wimmer battling Lee Jacobs, Brian Smith, Dean Jacobs and Sebetto for fourth. Andrews would finally drive under the lapped cars as the white flew. Andrews and Mintz would drive nose to tail down the back stretch one final time and Mintz drove high in turn three to try to pass Andrews. Andrews was just too good on the bottom and drove off to the win. Mintz, Lee, Lee Jacobs and Smith would round out the top five.

“I just tried to hit my marks…I screwed up a couple of times and that’s how those guys caught me. I must have been watching the fireworks off of turn two and I saw a shadow and figured I’d better get going,” Andrews continued from the Engine Pro Victory Lane.

In the 305 sprint feature, Dustin Stroup drove into the early lead with Colvin, Dustin Dinan, Josh Muntz and Zack Kramer in tow. Colvin immediately drove to the bottom while Stroup rim-road around the top as they raced side-by-side for the lead. Colvin finally took the top spot on lap five. A caution for a Page Polyak spin would bunch up the field, but Colvin would not be rattled and continued to lead as Stroup continually drove to his outside. Behind that dogfight, Dinan and Kramer staged their own battle for third. 

Back-to-back cautions on laps 10 and 11 would again give Stroup shots at Colvin’s outside, but the young driver remained cool and drove the bottom to perfection to continue to lead as Kramer and Dinan continued their battle while behind them Muntz, Stuart Brubaker and Brad Haudenschild carried on a wicked race for fifth. The final caution would fly on lap 14 with the running order Colvin, Stroup, Kramer, Dinan, Haudenschild, Brubaker, Muntz, Nate Dussel and Paul Weaver. 

Colvin would pull away while Stroup now had to deal with Kramer, Dinan and Haudenschild. With four laps remaining, Colvin remained in charge with Stroup now battling Dinan and Haudenschild for second as Kramer slid off the track, falling back to ninth. As Colvin took the white flag, Stroup and Haudenschild were racing side-by-side with Dinan right on their rear bumper.

At the checkered it was Colvin over Haudenschild, Stroup, Dinan and Dussel.

In the first truck feature, McGrath Jr. would grab the early lead over Henning, Kent Brewer, Bob Dible, Jeff Wank and Cory Ward. The first caution would fly for Kent Brewer on lap three with the running order McGrath, Hennig, Wank, Dible and Ward. Ward would drive into third on lap five as he raced on the rear deck lid of the battle for the lead between McGrath and Hennig. A caution for debris on lap seven bunched up the field, and McGrath could not shake Hennig. Another caution on lap 10 saw McGrath leading over Hennig, Ward, Dible, Steve Sabo and Jim McGrath Sr.

Hennig would not let another opportunity slip away as he drove under McGrath who bobbled in turn three on lap 12 to take the lead. The caution would fly on lap 14 when McGrath Sr. lost power with the running order Hennig, McGrath Jr., Ward and Sabo. A lap and another caution. Hennig was just too strong on the restarts and drove away the final five circuits for the win with Dible grabbing second at the checkered over McGrath Jr., Sabo and Ward.

In the second feature, McGrath Jr. would again grab the early lead over Brewer, Hennig, Loren Schwochow and Brad Mitten. Following a caution with one lap in, McGrath would again lead with Brewer racing to his outside and Hennig right on his rear bumper. Brewer would take the top spot on lap three with Hennig driving into second a lap later. McGrath Jr. would rebound to retake second on lap eight as Hennig and Endicott battled for third. 

McGrath Jr. would drive to the outside of Brewer to retake the lead on lap 12 and a lap later Endicott would grab second as Brewer, Hennig, Dible and Sabo followed. The racing action would then suffer through a rash of cautions – a lap, a caution, a lap, a caution, a lap, a caution. With five laps remaining the running order was McGrath Jr., Endicott, Brewer, Dible, Hennig and Sabo. Two laps later another caution as Endicott’s great run would end with mechanical woes. On the restart McGrath would drive away from Brewer who had his hands full with Dible. A caution on lap 19 would set up a green, white checkered finish and McGrath was just too strong as he took the win over Dible, Brewer, Sabo and Hennig.

Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, July 10 on Fisher Performance night with the 410 sprints, 305 sprints and dirt trucks. There will also be a make-up feature from the Crown Battery Night for the 305 sprints.
