FREMONT, Ohio - John Ivy
used his years of experience to hold off a
hard-charging youngster
to claim one of the richest prizes in the nation for
305 sprints as he took the
win in the All Pro Cylinder Heads Invitational at
Fremont Speedway Sunday,
Sept. 6.
Fostoria, Ohio's Bob Dible
capped off a great weekend with his 8th career
victory in the Fremont Fence
Dirt Trucks. Dible took the feature win the
night before at Attica Raceway
Park.
"Bobby (Clark) snookered
me a little on the initial start, but on the second
one I got on it a little
harder," said Ivy beside his Adkins Fence, Sony's
Machining and Welding, Last
Call Bar, Level Performance baked #94.
"My hats off to Jimmy Colvin...
he's a good little racer. I saw him under me
and I thought I was good
up top, but when I went down to block I found out
the car was better there
in one and two," added Ivy in the Engine Pro
Victory Lane.
Colvin, of Bellevue, Ohio,
knows he can learn from following someone like
Ivy.
"We've been getting better
and better and I've been feeling a lot more
comfortable in the car,"
said Colvin, just 16-years-old beside his K&G
Contracting backed #9. "On
those restarts I did learn one thing...I have to
stand on the gas a little
harder."
Leipsic, Ohio's Todd Heuerman,
who won the invitational last year, came home
third in the 30-lap feature
for the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305
Sprints.
"I got a couple runs on Jimmy,
but he would just slide right back under me.
But, it was still a good
night to come home in third," said Heuerman beside
his P.W. Chamberlin Trucking,
Quality Concrete backed #18.
Dible about gave up the win,
as Dan Hennig passed him with just three laps
to go. That woke Dible up
and he dove back inside Hennig to regain the lead.
Hennig would then retire
to the pits with a flat tire, as Dible went on to
the win.
"I didn't see anyone challenging
for so long I got a little complacent.
Then, when Dan got under
me I said 'I better go' and hit the gas," said
Dible beside his Bob's Machine
Shop, BMS Engines backed #17.
At the drop of the green
for the 305 sprint feature, Bobby Clark grabbed the
lead over Ivy, but it was
all for naught as the yellow flew for Brad Bowman.
On the second attempt a
the start, Ivy got the upper hand while Colvin would
race inside Clark for second.
The race would then go 19 laps before the red
would fly, with Ivy hitting
lapped traffic by lap nine. Colvin would race
inside Ivy for the lead
several times until they hit the backmarkers, where
Ivy used his years of experience
to pull away slightly.
Meanwhile, the fans were
treated to a tremendous battle for third between
Clark, Heuerman, Paul Weaver
and Jake Trevino. By lap 13, Clark and Heuerman
had caught Colvin in traffic
and the three put on a great battle for the
runner-up positions.
The racing action would grind
to a halt on lap 19 when Josh Muntz took a
tumble in turn two. Ivy
now had a lapped machine between himself and Colvin.
Ivy would use the clear
track to pull away while the battle for second
heated up between Colvin
and Heuerman, with D.J. Foos now making a late race
charge into fourth.
The caution would fly on
lap 24 to bunch up the field, and Ivy again pulled
away on the ensuing restart
while Colvin and Heuerman ran side-by-side for
second. The final caution
would fly on lap 27, setting up a three lap shoot
out for the $2,500 top prize.
Ivy was able to pull away
for his 27th career victory, moving him into a tie
with Steve Sabo for 12th
on the track's all time win list. Rounding out the
top five were Colvin, Heuerman,
Foos and Clark. Nate Dussel picked up a
bonus from Kistler Racing
Products for the hard-charger award for his 21st
to 11th finish.
Dible would grab the early
lead of the dirt truck feature with Loren
Schwochow, Will Tezak, Art
Howey Jr. and Kent Brewer in tow. Following a
first lap yellow, Dible
would again pull away with Tezak moving into second
on lap three. A yellow on
lap three again bunched up the field, but Dible
was able to pull away again.
The final caution would fly on lap 7 with Dible
leading Tezak and a charging
Jim McGrath and Dan Hennig.
By the halfway point, Dible
had a 7 truck length advantage over Tezak who
had his hands full with
McGrath and Hennig. Hennig would take the third spot
on lap 12 and drive around
Tezak into second a lap later. Hennig quickly
began closing on Dible and
with four laps to go was racing under him for the
lead. Hennig would take
the top spot on lap 17, but Dible charged back
around, while Hennig's challenge
would be for naught as he had to leave the
track on lap 18 with a flat
tire.
Dible would go on to the
victory with Tezak, McGrath, Jimmy McGrath Jr. and
Art Howey Jr. rounding out
the top five.
Fremont Speedway will be
back in action Saturday, Sept. 12 for the Kistler
Racing Products Season Championship
night for the 410 sprints, 305 sprints
and dirt trucks. It will
also be the championship night for the Kistler
Racing Products Fremont
Attica Sprint Title for the 410 sprints.
