Henry wins ALMS at Fremont, Stuart Brubaker in 305's and Cory Ward takes
the Dirt Trucks

By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio - Ada, Ohio's
Jon Henry had heard a lot about the historic
Fremont Speedway. But, the
current Sunoco American Late Model Series point
leader had never raced on
the one-third mile clay oval... until Saturday,
and he became one of the
very few drivers to win a feature his first time on
"The Track That Action Built."
Piloting the Halcomb Racing
late model, "The Steel Driver" dominated the
30-lap feature on Underground
Utilities Inc. Fan Appreciation Night in front
of a big crowd, including
area school kids who were admitted free.
"I've heard and read a lot
about this place and the great racing that
happens here. Now I can
say I'm part of that excitement," said Henry in the
Engine Pro Victory Lane
beside his University of Northwestern Ohio, JEGS
Automotive, backed late
model.
In the Fremont Federal Credit
Union 305 Sprints, defending track champion
Stuart Brubaker took the
lead on a lap six restart and had a tremendous
battle throughout the rest
of the 25 lap feature with D.J. Foos before
claiming his second career
victory.
"I've been on a mission the
last three weeks. We've been having troubles in
the shop and last week we
had a fuel pump problem, so I had to redeem
myself," said Brubaker in
the Engine Pro Victory Lane beside his Brubaker
Auction Services KS Sales
and Service backed sprinter.
Sandusky's Cory Ward held
off several challenges from Dan Hennig and then
Art Ball to record his second
win of the season at Fremont in the Fremont
Fence Dirt Trucks. It was
also his 15th career victory.
"I'm just two wins behind
my dad (Jim Ward). He works had on this. If I
catch him he could just
grab the other truck and get back out here," said
Ward, who missed his 10th
year Bellevue Senior High School class reunion to
race. "We had some bad luck
to start off the season, and to come out here
and win...it works out."
In the 30-lap late model
feature, Henry pulled away to a big lead after a
first lap caution that involved
four cars. A great race ensued for second
between Brian Ruhlman, Shawn
Negangard, Ky Harper and Larry Kingseed. It
seemed the race could not
find a rhythm, as three cautions flew back to back
on laps 7-10. Each time
Henry would pull away from the field.
By lap 10, however, the race
started to flow, and as Henry led, Negangard
and Kingseed put on a whale
of a battle for second, as Harper and Mike Bores
battled side-by-side behind
them. A yellow for debris on lap 19 saw the
running order Henry, Kingseed,
Negangard, Harper and Bores. Negangard would
regain second a lap later,
bringing Harper to third. Two final cautions
would fly on laps 22 and
23, and again, each time Henry would pull away, and
again, the battle for second
was fantastic between Negangard, Harper,
Kingseed and Bores.
Henry would streak to the
checkers with Negangard, Harper, Bores and
Kingseed rounding out the
top five.
"The race track was interesting...it
was one of those races tonight where
you had to hug the bottom
to find that moisture coming off the corner. It
took me the first five laps...
I kept making an error and then get back to
the bottom and be able to
stick it. I said I'll just drive it straight,"
said Henry of his first
win of the season.
Shawn Valenti grabbed the
lead at the drop of the green of the 25-lap 305
sprint feature, but Coty
Runion would drive under him for the top spot a lap
later. Following an caution
on lap two, sixth starting Brubaker was on the
move, grabbing second. A
yellow on lap six followed for a tip-over red for
Bobby Clark on the restart
saw the running order Runion, Brubaker, Valenti,
Jake Trevino and D.J. Foos.
It was the restart on lap eight that saw
Brubaker drive around Runion
for the lead, bringing Foos with him. Following
a caution on lap nine, the
race went the rest of the way green.
The next 15 laps saw
Foos challenge Brubaker for the lead at every turn,
but Brubaker would hit his
marks and take the victory, with Valenti, Jimmy
Colvin and Steve Rando rounding
out the top five.
"I saw him (Coty Runion)
get on the bottom and you have to lift getting down
there...I said if I can
hold this thing to the floor and not lift I could
get him getting off turn
two," said Brubaker on his winning pass. "D.J. put
a lot of pressure on me.
I knew if I didn't stay cool on the top and keep my
momentum off of turn two
I would be in trouble. That kid is awesome to race
with."
Jimmy McGrath Jr. grabbed
the lead to start the 20-lap dirt truck main while
Ward pressured. Ward would
drive under McGrath for the lead a circuit later,
bringing Dan Hennig along.
Following a lap three caution, Ward and Hennig
would engage in a great
battle for the lead until a caution on lap 9 slowed
the action. The race would
resume and go green the rest of the way.
While Ward and Hennig battled,
that allowed Jim McGrath Sr., Art Ball, Jim
Keegan and Steve Endicott
to close. Ball would grab the second spot on lap
13, but could not catch
Ward. Ball, Hennig, Keegan and Endicott would round
out the top five finishing
order.
Fremont Speedway will be
back in action Saturday, June 6, as McDonald's
Presents the Hall of Fame
Induction.
