FREMONT, Ohio - Since leaving
his World of Outlaws ride two weeks ago, Tim
Shaffer is having fun again
behind the wheel of a 410 sprint car. The
Pennsylvania driver took
over the duties of the Aaron Call #83 this week and
is two-for-two after winning
at Fremont Speedway Saturday, July 5. The Steel
City Outlaw won the All
Star Circuit of Champions race Friday in Indiana as
well.
"After being out on the road
these past years and then losing my ride....it
was a little upsetting.
Then I got in Bryan Grove's car for Speedweek and
now Aaron Call and Brian
Kemenah gave me a chance in this car and it's fun
racing again. I'm back to
my roots and I'm just having a blast," said
Shaffer in the Engine Pro
Victory Lane.
Shaffer earned $3,500 for
the Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprints' 40-lap
feature on a night that
was dedicated to the men and women who have served
and are serving in the military.
The Fremont Federal Credit
Union 305 Sprints had a busy night, with a
make-up feature from June
26 to be run along with the regular night's
feature event. Earning their
first career visits to the Engine Pro Victory
Lane were McCutchenville's
Travis Hoffbauer in the make-up event, and
Tiffin's Duane Zablocki
in the $1,000 win Coors Light feature.
Hoffbauer grabbed the lead
on lap 11 and held off Matt Ferrill for the
make-up feature win as Ohio
Governor Ted Strickland looked on.
"This is the greatest moment
of my life," said 17-year-old Hoffbauer beside
his Hoffbauer Construction,
Mountain Main Trading Post backed #82. "I saw
that 01 (Bryan Sebetto)
under me (on lap 17) and I thought I'd better gas'er
up."
Zablocki led all 25 laps
of the night's regular 305 sprint feature, but had
to contend with a hard-charging
Stuart Brubaker and lapped traffic the final
five laps.
"We finally got a good starting
spot and that helped. But my crew has been
working their tails off
and this weekend we turned things around," said
Zablocki beside his Zablocki
Construction, Jeff Haymon Excavating, Burns
Electric backed car after
taking second Friday at Attica Raceway Park as
well. "Lapped traffic was
not much fun tonight for me."
In the Fremont Fence Dirt
Trucks, Steve Sabo inherited the lead on the third
lap and held off challenges
from Cory Ward, Jim McGrath and Dwight
Waltermeier in a tremendous
battle throughout the feature for his 27th
career win at "The Track
That Action Built. Sabo now sits 12th on Fremont
Speedway's all-time career
feature win list.
"Dave Gibbs, Dave Severs,
my wife, my daughter...everyone has been working
hard on this truck to get
it better and we're getting there," said Sabo
beside his Progressive Iron
and Metal, Sabo Race Cars and Trucks backed #16.
Prior to the racing action,
fans were treated to a day of fun and games at
the historic Sandusky County
Fairgrounds, thanks to all the branches of the
armed services. The night
included tributes by fans who purchased laps in
memory or in support of
military personnel both past and present, with the
proceeds going to veterans
services. Also, the 50-50 raffle saw over $2,500
raised for the Jeremy Shock
Foundation in honor of the Green Springs, Ohio
soldier who was killed in
Iraq. The funds will help with the installation of
lights at ball fields in
Shock's hometown. Fans were also treated to a
fireworks display thanks
to support from Wendt Key Team Realty, York
Fabrication, CA Kustoms,
Heinz USA, the Eagles Aerie, VFW, American Legion,
Kmart, Crown Battery, Ludwig
Propane, Fremont Federal Credit Union, Wendy's
Restaurant, KF Ventures,
Sweet Home Cafe, American Auto Sales, Baker
Bonningson Auctioneers,
the City of Fremont, and the Baumann Auto Group.
At the start of the 410 sprint
feature, David Harrison looked to make it two
big wins in a row, jumping
into a commanding lead with Craig Mintz, Shaffer,
Lee Jacobs and Dale Blaney
in tow. As Harrison hit lapped traffic on lap 7,
Mintz and Shaffer closed,
setting up a great three car battle for the lead.
Disaster struck for Harrison
on lap 9, as he got into the back of John Ivy
while trying to put him
a lap down, sending Ivy flipping into turn three and
Harrison to the pits with
front end suspension damage.
Mintz was now the point man
and he pulled away from Shaffer, with Jacobs,
Blaney, Brock Mayes and
Mike Linder locked into a great battle behind. By
lap 15, Mintz had caught
lapped traffic, allowing Shaffer to close and race
side-by-side for the lead.
A Brandon Martin spin on lap 17 gave Mintz a
clear track and he once
again built his lead while Jacobs, Blaney and Mike
Linder waged a tremendous
battle for third.
Following a lap 18 caution,
Mintz would quickly catch the rear of the field
by lap 26, again allowing
Shaffer to close, while Blaney moved into third
and began to challenge.
On lap 28, Mintz and Shaffer were side by side with
Blaney right on their rear
bumper. Shaffer would use a lapped machine as a
pick and drive under Mintz
for the lead on lap 29. Shaffer used his
experience to pick his way
through traffic and would take the checkered over
Mintz, Blaney, Mayes and
Jacobs.
In the make-up 305 sprint
feature, Matt Ferrell would grab the early lead
with Hoffbauer, Matt Merrill
and Coty Runion in tow. Merrill and Hoffbauer
pulled away from the field
and hit lapped traffic by the ninth circuit.
Hoffbauer used the lapped
machines to his advantage and driver under Ferrell
for the lead on lap 11.
At the half-way mark, the
car on the move was Bryan Sebetto who was up to
third from his ninth starting
spot. Following a lap 15 yellow, Sebetto
quickly dispatched of Ferrell
and began putting the pressure on Hoffbauer.
Sebetto put a flyer on the
youngster in turn three to take the lead on lap
17, only to see the yellow
displayed for a D.J. Foos spin. On the restart,
Sebetto hauled it into turn
one to attempt another pass of Hoffbauer...the
rearend broke, sending him
flipping into turn two.
With a clear track, Hoffbauer
held off Ferrell for the win, with Merrill,
Kevin Lee and rookie Zack
Kramer rounding out the top five.
In the regular 305 sprint
feature, Zablocki grabbed the lead from the drop
of the green, with Cap Henry,
Brad Haudenschild, Dustin Dinan and Bobby
Clark in tow. Dinan, Henry
and Clark would get together on the front stretch
on the second lap, ending
Henry and Clark's run with Dinan being sent
pitside for rough driving.
Zablocki would continue to
lead with pressure being applied by Haudenschild
while Nate Dussel and Stuart
Brubaker waging a great battle for third.
Haudenschild's run would
end on lap 7 when he slid off the high side of turn
four. On the restart, Zablocki
would pull away in the lead while Dussel and
Brubaker continued their
fight for second.
Brubaker would move into
second on lap 10 and would begin to put pressure on
Zablocki when they hit lapped
traffic by lap 13. Dussel's run would end when
he and Kramer made contact
battling for third. With five laps remaining,
Brubaker began to put pressure
on Zablocki and they ran side by side the
remaining distance.
At the checkered, Zablocki
took the win over Brubaker, Kramer, Chad Wilson
and Kevin Lee rounding out
the top five.
In the dirt truck feature,
Kent Brewer grabbed the initial lead, only to be
sidelined with a flat tire.
Dan Henning took the point and spun the next lap
in turn two. Sabo then took
the point and the battle was on. The entire
distance of the race saw
a great seven truck battle up front involving Sabo,
Ward, Andy Maynard, Jim
McGrath, Waltermeier, Danny Roepke and Jim Keegan.
By the ninth lap, Sabo, McGrath,
Ward and Waltermeier were locked in a
tremendous battle up front.
At the halfway mark the running order was Sabo,
McGrath, Ward, Waltermeier,
Keegan, Maynard and Roepke.
Waltermeier would move into
second on lap 14 and challenge Sabo for the
lead. Sabo would gradually
pull away for the win with Waltermeier, Ward,
McGrath and Roepke rounding
out the top five.
Fremont Speedway will be
back in action Saturday, July 12 for Schiets
