FREMONT, Ohio - Byron Reed's
410 sprint car has been fast all year. However,
the Monclova, Ohio driver
felt his game was not matching the quality of his
machine. It all came together
for him Saturday at Fremont Speedway, as he
recorded his first win of
2008 on McDonald's Night.
Reed, the defending Fort
Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprint champion at "The Track
That Action Built," took
the lead from Brook Mayes on lap 10 and went on to
his 14th career victory
at the historic speedway.
"Everyone has said I've been
struggling...it really hasn't been that way.
The car has been a top five
car every night. I feel I just haven't been on
my game. Tonight everything
worked perfect," said Reed in the Engine Pro
Victory Lane beside his
Reebar Die-casting, JEI Chassis, ProShock backed #5.
Fremont's Bobby Clark and
Sandusky's Cory Ward made it a double-dip weekend
in the Fremont Federal Credit
Union 305 Sprints and Fremont Fence Dirt
Trucks respectively. Both
drivers won Friday night at Attica Raceway Park
and backed that up with
wins at Fremont.
Clark drove to the high side
of Bill Kraylek for the lead on lap 13 and
survived a three yellow
flags trying to get the last two laps in for the
win.
"My motor kept loading up
with fuel on those last couple of restarts...I was
just praying it wouldn't
stumble on the green flag. I got boxed in early in
the race and couldn't get
to the high side of the track. Once I got out of
traffic I knew I'd be good.
I have to thank my crew...they make driving this
thing so easy," said Clark
in the Engine Pro Victory Lane beside his Jenny's
Copper Penny, Abdoo Wrecking,
Williams & Son Masonry backed #40.
Ward drove under Dan Henning
on lap 9 to take the lead and also survived a
restart with two laps remaining
to claim his second win of the season at
Fremont.
"This thing is just on a
rail. Thanks to my dad, my grandpa and my uncle for
all the work they do during
the week. That's two weeks in a row we had
restarts with two laps to
go....it gets a little nerve-racking," said Ward
in the Engine Pro Victory
Lane beside his Budweiser, Blue Chip Machine,
Excuses Lounge backed #18w.
Brock Mayes in the Stan Cortad
owned 9x grabbed the early led in the 30-lap
410 sprint feature with
Chris Andrews, John Ivy and Mike Linder in tow.
Fifth-starting Reed moved
into third by lap three and began putting pressure
on Andrews for the runner-up
position. Reed, who was running the high line
in turns one and two and
the bottom in turns three and four, drove into
second on lap eight and
began chasing down Mayes. Reed would drive into the
lead on lap 10.
Reed would hit heavy lapped
traffic on lap 12 with Mayes, Andrews,
fast-qualifier Paul McMahan
and Linder closing. Disaster nearly struck the
leader on lap 14 when Cole
Duncan spun right in front of him. Reed avoided
the youngster and would
have a lapped machine between himself and Mayes on
the restart.
Reed would pull away with
Mayes and McMahan battling side by side for
several laps for the runner-up
position, with Linder right on their rear
bumper. Linder's run would
come to an end on lap 17 when he made contact
with the front stretch wall,
breaking rear suspension parts.
Once again on the restart
Reed would pull away with Mayes, McMahan, Ivy and
Mark Keegan waging a great
battling for second. The final yellow would fly
on lap 22 for a Caleb Griffith
spin, and Reed's bottom groove off of four
gave him another excellent
restart. McMahan would drive around Mayes for
second on lap 24.
Reed would take the checkers
for his 14th career victory at Fremont Speedway
over McMahan, Mayes, Keegan
and Ivy.
Pole-sitter Bill Kraylek
would take the lead when Ronald McDonald himself
dropped the green in the
305 sprint main with rookie Jake Trevino, Mark
Pridemore, Cap Henry and
Chad Wilson in tow. Kraylek and Trevino would race
side-by-side for several
laps before the veteran would begin to pull away.
Clark was the car on the
move, driving from his sixth-starting spot to third
by lap three. However, Henry
would not make it easy and battled him hard
over the next couple of
laps before the pair would then encounter Trevino
while keeping Kraylek in
their sights. Kraylek survived three early yellows
in the first seven laps.
Clark would move past Trevino
on lap 11 to grab the second spot and a lap
later drove around Kraylek
for the lead. Henry would take third on lap 13,
bringing Todd Heuerman into
fourth and Trevino back to fifth. Clark would
encounter lapped traffic
by lap 16, but sliced his way through to hold a
comfortable lead over Kraylek,
Henry, Heuerman and 12th-starter Kevin Lee.
Heuerman began pressuring
Henry for the third spot by lap 18 as the pair
raced the next four laps
side-by-side.
Henry's night would end as
he slipped off the high side of turns one and two
on lap 23 and stopped. That
would set up a couple of restart opportunities
with two laps remaining.
Fortunately for Clark he had a lapped machine
between himself and Kraylek.
When the race finally went the final two laps
Clark went on to score his
20th career victory at Fremont Speedway over
Kraylek, Lee, Heuerman and
Dustin Dinan.
Dan Henning grabbed the early
lead in the 20-lap truck feature with Loren
Schowochow, Art Ball, Steve
Sabo and Andy Maynard running in his tire
tracks. Trouble would strike
Schowchow on lap four when his truck quit
running, which collected
Ball.
On the restart, Henning continued
to lead, with Ward getting an awesome
restart to drive around
Steve Sabo and Dave Brewer into second on lap five.
Henning and Ward raced side-by-side
over the next three laps before Ward
drove under Henning for
the lead on lap nine.
While Ward pulled away, the
battle for second through sixth place was
exciting and changed nearly
every lap. The final caution would fly on lap
18. Ward would get a great
restart, but Henning stumbled badly, losing three
spots. At the checkers it
was Ward picking up his 10th career Fremont
victory over a closing Jim
McGrath, Henning coming back for third, Brewer
and Sabo rounding out the
top five.
Fremont Speedway will be
back in action Saturday, June 14 for Crown Battery
Night with the Fort Ball
Pizza Palace 410 Sprints, Fremont Federal Credit
Union 305 Sprints and Fremont
Fence Dirt Trucks in action. Gates open at 4
p.m. with the mud-slinging
action underway at 7 p.m.
