FREMONT, Ohio - Call it the
Bellevue, Ohio connection. Cap Henry and Mike
Bores took their first checkered
flags at Fremont Speedway Saturday on
Hillside Billiards and Underground
Utilities Inc. Night. Henry's win came in
the Fremont Federal Credit
Union 305 Sprints while Bores' victory was in the
ARP Late Models. Defending
Fremont Speedway track champion Cory Ward - whose
crew chief, his father,
Jim Ward lives in Bellevue - took the checkers in
the Fremont Fence Dirt Truck
feature.
Henry first had the lead,
then lost it and then regained it with just three
laps remaining to get his
first career victory at "The Track That Action
Built.
"I found that low groove
right before the red (on lap 11) and knew I had
something," said Henry in
the Engine Pro Victory Lane. "But, Brad (Keckler)
took off on that restart
and with five to go I was thinking second wouldn't
be all that bad."
"This makes up for all the
bad luck we've had here this year," added Henry
beside his G-Force Racing
Gear, J&H Concrete, HMS Speedway backed #04.
Bores led all 20 laps in
the late model main, but had a close call with
lapped traffic the
last couple of laps.
"When I got into lapped traffic
I kept telling myself 'oh boy...don't spin
out.' I've never won at
Fremont...this is awesome," said Bores who received
an extra $100 from Smith
Auto Recycling.
"Starting up front helped...I
just had to make sure I didn't screw up and
hit the cushion just right,"
added Bores beside his York Fabrication, UUI
backed late model.
Ward took the lead on lap
10 when early leader Dave Gibbs had to go pitside
with a flat tire. Then he
held off late race challenges by Jimmy McGrath to
get his 9th win at the historic
speedway.
"After that last yellow I
moved down just a smidge hoping it would work out
and it did," said Ward in
the Engine Pro Victory Lane beside his Budweiser,
Excuses Lounge, Lakeshore
Drywall backed truck. "I realized after 18
laps...I'm gettin kind of
fat," he joked.
In the 25-lap 305 sprint
main, Henry bolted into the early lead with Brad
Keckler, Shawn Valenti and
Steve Rando in tow. Keckler would drive under
Henry for the lead when
the teen bobbled ever so slightly in turn four.
Keckler benefited with a
yellow flag on lap 11 just as he was going to get
into heavy lapped traffic.
Keckler pulled away on the
restart with Henry comfortably in second, with
eighth place starter Kevin
Lee moving into third. The action would grind to
a halt a lap latter when
Dustin Dinan got together with Rando and flipped
into turn one.Once again
on the restart, Keckler pulled away while Henry and
Lee followed in his tire
tracks and Brad Bowman, Valenti and Stuart Brubaker
putting on a heck of a show
for fourth.
With five laps to go, Henry
began to reel Keckler in. The pair raced side by
side the next two laps before
Henry drove under Keckler exiting turn two for
the lead. Following Henry
across the finish line were Keckler, Lee, Brubaker
and Nate Dussel.
In the 20-lap late model
main, Bores jumped into the lead from his pole
starting spot with John
Mayes Jr. and Ernie Haynes following in his tire
tracks. Bores hit lapped
traffic by lap 13, allowing Mayes to close on his
rear bumper. Mayes would
look under Bores several times but could not pull
off the pass. Bores had
several close calls with traffic the last three
laps, but hung on for the
win with Mayes, Haynes, Larry Kingseed and Ken
Hahn rounding out the top
five.
In the 20-lap dirt truck
feature, Dave Gibbs grabbed the early lead with
Kent Brewer, Art Ball and
Cory Ward battling hard behind. Ward would move
into the second spot on
lap four, but could not chase down Gibbs. When the
yellow flew on lap 9 for
Loren Schwochow and Dave Brewer, Gibbs exiting the
track with a flat tire.
Ward wasted no time building
up a lead over Ball and Jim McGrath Jr. The
action behind Ward was hot
and heavy between McGrath, Ball, Dwight
Waltermeier, Jim McGrath
Sr. and Andy Maynard. McGrath Jr. would move into
second on lap 12 and would
dive under Ward nearly every lap but could not
pull off the pass.
At the checkers it was Ward
over McGrath Jr., Ball, Waltermeier and Steve
Sabo who came from deep
in the pack.
Fremont Speedway will be
back in action Saturday, June 7 when Ronald
McDonald pays a visit. The
Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprints; Fremont
Federal Credit Union 305
Sprints; and Fremont Fence Dirt Trucks will be on
the racing card.
