cruises to win at Fremont; Shammo, Waltermeier take last-lap victories
in 305s and trucks
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio (Saturday, June 16, 2007)
- Fremont's John Ivy put a stop to
Byron Reed's win-streak, leading all 30
laps on Coors Beer Night to claim
his 26th career victory at Fremont Speedway.
Millbury's Andy Shammo executed
a last lap, last corner pass to claim
his fourth win of the season in the
305 sprints, while Wayne, Ohio's Dwight
Waltermeier also made a last-lap
pass to claim his first win of the year
in the dirt truck feature.
Ivy's win in the Fort Ball Pizza Palace
410 Sprints was the second of the
season aboard the Dee Genzman owned #51.
Ironically, it tied him for 12th on
the all-time win list with his car owner,
each with 26 victories.
"The car was just so smooth on the bottom.
I tried the high side a couple of
times in lapped traffic, but I just wasn't
any good," said Ivy in the Engine
Pro Victory Lane.
"I guess since we tied Dee in wins now
we'll have to get a couple of more or
he might come out of retirement," joked
Ivy, the three-time Fremont track
Shammo, the current point leader in the
Fremont Federal Credit Union 305
Sprints, utilized the high side of track
while others ran the bottom, and
used a lapped machine as a pick to move
around race-long leader Matt Lucius
in turn 3 to earn his 12th career Fremont
"I knew I had to run the high line because
everyone was on the bottom...that
was the only way I was going to get to
the front (he started 12th) ," said
Shammo in the Engine Pro Victory Lane
beside his Adler's Transmission/Kate &
Al's Bar sponsored #48s. "I didn't even
realize when I passed Matt that it
was for the lead."
Waltermeier hugged the bottom groove and
was patient, waiting until exiting
turn 2 on the final lap to move around
Jim McGrath for the win in the
Fremont Fence Dirt Trucks. It was Waltermeier
fourth career victory at "The
Track That Action Built."
"We've been good all year, but we lost
a motor earlier and that put us
behind," said Waltermeier in the Engine
Pro Victory Lane beside his CA
Kustoms sponsored truck. "I knew in the
feature I had to stay on the bottom
and just be patient."
In the 30-lap 410 sprint feature, Ivy shot
into the lead from his pole
starting spot with Byron Reed, who has
won the last three features he has
competed in, right on his rear bumper.
The leaders hit lapped traffic by lap
7, with Reed staying close to Ivy, with
Gus Wasson, Mike Linder and David
Harrison rounding out the top five. By
lap 12, Ivy moved up on the track to
try and navigate through heavy lapped
traffic, allowing Reed to close. Ivy
averted near disaster on lap 14, nearly
sliding off the high side of turn
three while battling the traffic.
The first caution would fly on lap 17 with
Ivy and Reed still the top two
with three lapped machines back to third
place Mike Linder. After another
lap and another yellow, Reed would move
along side Ivy on the restart, but
Ivy rocketed off the bottom to stretch
out his lead. Another yellow would
fly on lap 22, and this time there were
no lapped cars seperating Ivy, Reed
and Linder. But once again Ivy would pull
away on the restart and would go
on to score the win. Reed, Linder, Wasson
and 12th-starting Paul Weaver
would round out the top five.
In the non-stop 25-lap 305 sprint feature,
Tiffin's Matt Lucius would grave
the lead from his pole starting spot,
with Mark Pridemore, Coty Runion, Mark
Whaley and Dustin Keegan in tow. Utilizing
the bottom groove, Lucius would
build a substantial lead until he hit
lapped traffic by lap 9. Runion would
reel in the leader and the battle for
the top spot really heated up by lap
Meanwhile Shammo was steadily moving his
way through the pack. He was 7th by
lap 9, 6th by lap 14 and moved into the
top five with 10 laps remaining.
Lucius was having his problems with lapped
traffic, as they were all racing
in his bottom groove. However, Runion
could not gain any ground and
continued to follow in his tire tracks,
as did third running Dustin Keegan.
With 5 laps remaining, Shammo began to
make his move, going to the top side.
He moved from fourth to second on lap
21, and began to hunt down Lucius. As
Lucius took the white flag, he and Shammo
raced side by side through turns 1
and 2 and down the back stretch. Going
into turn 3, Lucius got hung on the
bottom behind a lapped car, allowing Shammo
to sling-shot around the high
side for the win. Lucius, Runion, Keegan
and Whaley would round out the top
In the 20-lap truck feature, Chuck Roelle
grabbed the early lead with a six
truck battle behind him for second. The
first yellow would fly on lap 6 with
the running order Roelle, Jim McGrath,
Dave Brewer, Dwight Waltermeier and
McGrath would use the high line to drive
around Roelle into the lead on lap
8. The final yellow would wave on lap
10 with the running order McGrath,
DeVanna, Roelle, Brewer, Waltermeier and
Bob Dible. McGrath would build a
five truck length lead while the next
six positions continued to change each
lap. With 5 laps to go, the running order
was McGrath, DeVanna, Waltermeier,
Cory Ward and last week's winner Art Ball.
As McGrath took the white flag,
Waltermeier drove under him exiting turn
2 to grab the lead, bringing Ward
At the checkered flag Waltermeier took
the win with Ward, McGrath, Ball and
16th-starter Steve Endicott rounding out
the top five.
