Schlenk wins 1st
ALMS late model feature at Fremont
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio (Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006) - Rusty Schlenk nervously paced
around Fremont Speedway prior to Saturday's True Value Hardware of
Woodville
ALMS Late Model feature.
He knew he had a fast car, but he was afraid the track was going to
be a
one-lane affair, and starting 16th, he wouldn't be able to get to the
front.
However, he carefully picked his way forward and grabbed the lead on
a
restart with 10 laps remaining and went on to score his first career
ALMS
victory.
"I thought the track would slick off and be one lane, but it stayed
racey. I
was so nervous I almost made myself sick," said Schlenk beside his
Tres
Amigos sponsored Rayburn. "I've run a bunch of seconds in these, but
finally, we got one. I have to thank my crew and all my sponsors for
their
patience."
Bryan Sebetto held off a charging Paul Weaver to score his fifth win
of the
season at "The Track That Action Built" in the Fremont Federal Credit
Union
305 Sprints. It was Sebetto's 9th career Fremont victory.
"I saw Paul go low in turn two and I thought I'd have to change my line
on
that last lap. But when we went into turn three I saw Bill Kraylek
on the
bottom and I knew I was alright," said Sebetto beside his Frosty's
Pizza,
Madison Street Tavern sponsored #01. "I have to thank Josh Meggitt
who put
my in his car for the rest of the year after we wrecked ours. I also
want to
dedicate the win to my friend Joe Rebman (who lost his life earlier
this
year in a racing crash)... We painted our car a couple of weeks ago
like his
and unfortunately we crashed it."
Brian Arnold of Tiffin scored his second straight win in the Coors Light
Dirt Trucks. It was his third win of the season at Fremont and his
6th
career victory.
"I finally got comfortable on the high side. We really have this Burns
Electric, Air Cooled Engines, Crown Battery truck going forward," said
Arnold.
At the start of the 30-lap feature, Lima's Ronnie Perrin Jr. jumped
into the
early lead with Jerry Bowersock, Brian Ruhlman and Duane Chamberlain
in tow.
The yellow would slow action after one lap, with Schlenk already up
to 8th.
On the restart, Perrin would continue to lead, with Bowersock, Ruhlman
and
Aaron Scott in tow. Bowersock would take the top spot on lap nine in
heavy
lapped traffic, with Scott moving into the third spot with Chamberlain
and
now Schlenk rounding out the top five.
Just past the half-way mark, Bowersock and Perrin would stage a great
battle
for the top spot, with Scott and Schlenk right on their bumper. Perrin
would
regain the top position on lap 17, with Bowersock and now Schlenk in
the top
three. The yellow would fly again on lap 18 with Perrin, Bowersock,
Scott and
Chamberlain the running order.
The final caution would fall on lap 20, with the running order Perrin,
Bowersock, Schlenk, Chamberlain, and Matt Lux.The the restart, Schlenk
would
slingshot around Bowersock for second entering turn one and then fly
around
the outside of Perrin to grab the top spot exiting turn 2.
Schlenk would edge Perrin for the victory, with Lux, Chamberlain and
Bowersock rounding out the five.
In the 305 sprint feature, Bryan Sebetto would jump into the early lead
with Duane Zablocki, Andy Shammo, Coty Runion and Kevin Lee in tow.
A lap
later, Sebetto would lead over Zablocki, Shammo, eighth starting Paul
Weaver
and Runion completing the top five.
By lap 10, Sebetto would continue to lead, with Weaver now in second,
followed by Zablocki, Lee and 11th starting John Ivy. The action would
come
to a halt on lap 11 for Stuart Brubaker who hit the softwall in turn
one (he
was uninjured). The restart order was Sebetto, the lapped machine of
Brad
Haudenschild, Weaver, Zablocki, Lee and Ivy.
Sebetto would set sail, with Weaver stalking. Sebetto would continue
to
lead, as Weaver closed, followed by Zablocki and Ivy. By lap 17, Weaver
was
on Sebetto's rear bumper. However, Weaver would slip off the high side
of
turn a lap later, giving Sebetto some breathing room. Weaver would
close and
would race side by side with Sebetto with just 3 laps remaining, as
they
worked through lapped traffic.
At the checkered, Sebetto beat Weaver by three feet, with Ivy, Zablocki
and
Chris Andrews rounding out the top five.
The 20-lap dirt truck feature was once again a dandy. Art Ball and Bob
Dible
would race door to door the first seven laps for the top spot. Dible
would
slide off the high side of turn three on lap 9, moving Arnold into
second
with Dwight Waltermeier and Cory Ward in tow.
Arnold and Ball would then race side by side for the next 7 laps until
smoke
began billowing from Ball's truck. Ball would stop on the front stretch
to
bring out the caution on lap 16. Arnold would then cruise to the win,
with
18th starting Steve Sabo coming on late to grab second, Ward, Waltermeier
and current point leader Jim McGrath rounding out the top five.
