Ivy scores Fremont
sprint win; Weaver dominated 305 sprints; Arnold takes checkers in trucks
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio (Saturday, Aug 5, 2006) - Confidence is everything in
sprint car racing, and when you have a very talented pit crew behind you,
it gives you that extra bit of comfort. That was evident Saturday on Brubaker
Auction Night at Fremont Speedway, as four-time track champion John Ivy
picked up his 24th career victory at "The Track That Action Built.".
"When you have Andy and Lynn Potter and my brother Scott turning the
wrenches you know you're going to have a good car," said Ivy. "I have to
thank Dee Genzman for keeping me racing and Dennis Levell for building
us a heck of a motor."
In the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprints, Paul Weaver dominated
to pick up his sixth win of the season. It was the defending track champion
and current point leader's 19th career victory, moving him into a tie for
25th on the all-time win list.
"I hurt my good motor two weeks ago and my spare last night....this
is a two-year-old motor and it seems to be just as good," said Weaver beside
his M&L Excavating sponsored #1w. "I have to thank Dee Genzman for
giving me everything I need and more to win races."
Tiffin's Brian Arnold picked up his first win of the season in the Coors
Light Dirt Trucks, holding off current point leader Steve Sabo.
"Finally got to victory lane...we've been so close all year," said Arnold
beside his Burns Electric sponsored #33. "We have the Make-A-Wish Foundation
on the truck tonight...my niece just had her wish and we want to dedicate
this win to her."
The 30-lap feature for the Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprints got underway
with Todd Heller jumping into the lead with fifth starting Ivy moving into
second followed by Chuck Wilson and Jamie Miller. By the third lap, the
man on the move was 7th starting Phil Gressman as he moved into fourth
behind Heller, Ivy and Wilson. Gressman would move into third by lap six.
The first caution would fly on lap eight for a Byron Reed spin. The running
order was Heller, the lapped machine of Jon Finsel, Ivy, Gressman, Miller
and Mark Keegan.
The running order would remain that way when the caution would fly on
lap 11 for a stalled Finsel. When the action resumed, Ivy began putting
the pressure on Heller. Ivy would utilize the bottom groove in the third
and fourth turns and the high side in turns one and two while Heller stuck
to the bottom. Gressman would join the duo for a three-car battle for the
top spot by lap 12.
At the half-way mark the action settled a bit with the running order,
Heller, Ivy, Gressman, Lee Jacobs and Keegan. Following a caution for a
stalled Reed, Ivy would set up his winning move, sling-shotting around
the outside of Heller entering turn three to steal the top spot.
"On that yellow Andy (Potter) told me to stay up top. I moved the wing
back and it stuck," explained Ivy.
The action would halt for a Bryan Scott tip-over on lap 19 with the
running order Ivy, Heller, Gressman, Jacobs, Brian Smith, Keegan and 11th
starting Mike Linder. When action resumed, Linder utilized the top side
to move into fourth. Ivy began to stretch his lead as Heller had his hands
full with Gressman for the runner-up spot. As Ivy took the white flag,
Gressman drove around Heller, with Linder putting the pressure on for third.
Ivy picked up the checkered - the 24th of his career moving him into
a tie with Johnny Beaber for 15th on the all-time win list - with Gressman
coming in second and Linder, Heller and Jacobs rounding out the top five.
With one more full points night for the Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 sprints
coming Saturday, Aug. 12, defending champion Mike Linder is locked in a
tight battle with Reed and Jacobs.
In the 25-lap 305 sprint feature, Green Springs Josh Hill jumped into
the early lead with Evan Myers, Matt Merrill, Bill Kraylek and Coty Runion
in tow. The caution would fly on lap two as Andy Shammo stalled and Bryan
Sebetto got tangled with another car sending both to the pits. The yellow
would come out a lap later when Bobby Foster and Chad Wilson got together.
Hill continued to lead, but all eyes were on 11th starting Weaver who had
moved up to sixth. On the restart, Weaver shot around the high side and
into second and took the lead from Hill on lap five.
Now the fans' attention turned to 12th starting Chris Andrews who utilized
the high groove to move into fifth by lap. By lap eight, Weaver had moved
into a comfortable lead with Andrews now in second, Hill, Merrill and Stuart
Brubaker in tow. Andrews great run would be interupted on lap 12 as he
spun in turn two. Weaver would set sail on the restart, lapping up to the
8th place car at the checkered. Merrill would finish second with Andrews
coming from the back to salvage a third followed by Kevin Lee and Bill
Kraylek.
At the start of the 20-lap truck feature, the front row of Chuck Rolle
and Eric DeVanna got together, bringing out the yellow and moving Bob Dible
and Steve Endicott to the front row. On the next start, the red flew when
Art Howe Jr. and Bobby Davis got together hard in turn two. Davis was okay,
but Howe was checked out for a foot injury.
When the green came back out the action was non-stop, with Dible taking
the lead with Arnold, Sabo, Endicott and Dwight Waltermeier in tow. Arnold
would race under Dible for the lead a lap later and gaint he top spot as
they exited turn four to begin lap three.
Arnold couldn't hide Sabo, Dible, Cory Ward, Jim McGrath, Dwight Waltermeier
and Shawn Valenty stagging a great battle behind him.
Arnold would not budge off the bottom and he would lead the rest of
the way for his fourth career Fremont victory. Sabo, Ward, McGrath and
Waltermier would round out the top five.
