Mintz puts struggles
behind for Fremont win; Weaver scores 3rd victory; Endicott tops trucks
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio (Saturday, June 24, 2006) - To say Craig Mintz has
struggled this year is a big understatement. However, the Gibsonburg driver
found a way to put his troubles behind him on Baumann Auto Group Night
at Fremont Speedway to score his first win of the season in the Fort Ball
Pizza 410 Sprints.
Fremont's Paul Weaver scored his third victory of the year at "The Track
That Action Built" in the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprints.
It was the 16th of his career at Fremont Speedway.
The Coors Light Dirt Truck feature was once again a barn-burner, as
it came down to the last two turns on the last lap before Steve Endicott
would pull off his first win of the season, the second of his career.
"I have to thank everyone for sticking with me...we have struggled so
bad and my confidence was pretty low, but they kept plugging away and told
me it would be alright," said Mintz beside his Browning Ammunition, Keller
Chevrolet, Tiffin Eye Care Center sponsored sprinter. "I don't know what
happened to Brian (Smith)...I saw a car go high and when we came around
he was sitting sideways. It would have been a heck of a race between us
and David Harrison for the win."
"The race track was awesome...Randy Ford and everyone did an excellent
job. The high side was great and my crew had the car so good I could run
it in as hard as I wanted to and it would stick," said Weaver beside his
Levell Performance, Weaver-Koonce Construction sponsored #1W. "I
have to thank Dee Genzman and his family for all their help and for my
crew and my wife, who wasn't here because she was off running go-karts."
"I saw Danny (Roepke) and Steve (Sabo) racing side by side and rubbing
on each other down the back stretch. I figured if I could stay high and
out of trouble I had a chance," said Endicott beside his Bob's Machine
sponsored #8. "We finally figured this truck out...it likes the high side.
Hopefully we can string a couple of these wins together now."
Mintz and his family and friends bought the team over the winter, and
had troubles finding the handling on the 410 sprinter all season. A good
pill draw and qualifying effort and a decent heat race run put Mintz' #8s
on the outside front row of the feature.
It took three starts before the feature would get underway, as a Scott
Euler spin and then a Jamie Miller flip slowed the action. Mintz grabbed
the lead on the third start with Brian Smith and Bobby Clark in tow. Mintz
and Smith would race side by side for the next nine laps before Smith would
rocket off the bottom of turn two to take the lead. He would continue to
lead with Mintz right on his bumper, with the battle for third between
Clark and David Harrison.
At the halfway mark of the 30-lap feature, it was Smith, Mintz, Harrison,
Clark and John Ivy. Not much changed when the leaders hit lapped traffic
on lap 19, as Harrison began to pressure Mintz for second.
Disaster would strike for Smith on lap 27, when he hit the front stretch
wall while trying to lap a car, ending his run for his first career 410
sprint feature win. Mintz would be smooth on the high side the last three
laps to score his second career Fremont win. Harrison would come home second
with Byron Reed, Lee Jacobs and Bobby Clark rounding out the top five.
In the 305 sprint main, Josh Hill jumped into the lead from his pole
starting spot, with Matt Merrill and Dustin Dinan in tow. Sixth starting
Scott Kraylek was on the move as he moved into the runner-up spot on lap
2 and took the lead from Hill the next lap.
Kraylek hit lapped traffic on lap 12, with Merrill and ninth starting
Weaver moving in. The first caution would follow, with another yellow flying
on the restart. When the green reappeared, Kraylek continued to leave,
with Weaver shooting around Merrill for second and Brad Bowman up to fourth
from his 10th starting spot. Weaver would continue his assault from the
outside lane to grab the lead on lap 15 and go on to score the win over
Bowman, Kraylek, Andy Shammo and Merrill.
In the truck feature, Dave Gibbs would jump into the early lead, with
Endicott and Linda Sabo following close behind. Gibbs and Endicott would
battle side by side until lap seven when Danny Roepke would enter the fray.
Roepke would grab the lead off the bottom a lap latter and would continue
to lead with action heating up for second between Endicott and 11th starting
Steve Sabo. As Roepke took the white flag, Sabo would stick his front bumper
under him exiting turn two, with Endicott going high. Roepke and Sabo would
get together in turn three with Roepke getting spun, giving Endicott the
victory.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Thursday, June 29th as Miller
Beer presents leg #5 of the All Star Ohio Sprint Speedweey.
