Harrison, Bowman,
Howey 'Kings' at Fremont
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio (Saturday, June 17, 2006) - David Harrison destroyed
his 410 sprint car a few weeks ago at Fremont Speedway. The Burgoon driver
and his crew rebuilt an older car and it's been nothing but fast since,
as he powered to victory Saturday on Burger King Night at Fremont Speedway.
Shelby's Brad Bowman (Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprints) and
Fremont's Art Howey Jr. (Coors Light Dirt Trucks) scored their second wins
of the season.
Harrison led all 30 laps of the 410 sprint feature that saw only one
caution, to claim his sixth career Fremont victory.
"I have to thank my crew Bill Daugherty and Aaron Hammer...they've worked
their tails off getting this car together. It's an older car, but it just
keeps winning," said Harrison beside his Crown Battery/Snyder's Floor Covering
sponsored #10. "I owe all of this to Doug Ludwig...he keeps giving us everything
we need to compete. The car was so good tonight anyone could have driven
it."
Bowman utilized the track's outside groove to pass early leader Coty
Runion on lap 10 and went on to score his third career Fremont victory.
"I have to thank Cleveland Golf...without them I wouldn't be doing this.
I also have to thank my engine builder Scott Gressman. He worked his tail
off this week...we lost oil pressure last week and he got it right," said
Bowman.
"I set up to run the bottom, but it was too crowded down there and when
I went up top the car just took off," added Bowman who won by over half
a lap.
Howey took the lead on lap nine of the 20-lap truck main and fended
off several challenges by Dwight Waltermeier to score an emotional win.
"My daughter got married today and I had to leave to come race. While
this win is great, I would have loved to have had the dollar dance with
her," said Howey with tears welling up in his eyes. "The fans don't know
how tough this is....there are some awesome drivers in this division. I
heard a motor beside me a couple of times...didn't know who it was, so
I just gassed it up and kept it straight."
In the 410 sprint main, Harrison, who started outside the front row,
jumped around the outside of Scott Euler exiting turn four to grab the
lead. While "Super Dave" cruised to a commanding lead, the battle for second
was exciting between Euler, Mark Keegan, Alvin Roepke and Lee Jacobs.
Harrison hit lapped traffic by lap 13, with Keegan, Euler, Roepke, Jacobs,
Caleb Griffith, 11th starting Byron Reed and 14th starting John Ivy in
tow. The only caution would fly on lap 24 for a stalled Phil Gressman,
with Harrison putting four lapped cars between himself and Keegan.
Harrison would not be challenged the remaining six laps, with Keegan,
Jacobs, Roepke and Ivy rounding out the top five.
In the 305 sprint feature, pole sitter Coty Runion would grab the intitial
lead, with rookie Chad Wilson, Todd Heuerman and Kevin Lee in tow. Bowman,
who started sixth, would move into third by lap six and second a lap later.
Bowman would power around Runion on lap 10 to grab the point.
Bowman hit lapped traffic on lap 12, but cruised around the high side
with little difficulty. The battle was for second between Heuerman, Runion
and Wilson.
At the checkered flag, Bowman finished over a half lap ahead of Heuerman,
RUnion, Wilson and Paul Weaver.
Defending track champion Bobby Davis would grab the lead from his outside
front row starting spot in the dirt truck main, with Darren Dukeshire and
Dwight Waltermeier battling for second right on his rear bumper. Waltermeier
would use the high side to grab the lead on lap 4, with Davis back to second
and Howey in third. Howey would grab second a lap later and the lead on
lap
six.
The only caution would fly on lap nine for Brian Sorg, with the running
order Howey, Waltermeier, Davis, Jim McGrath, Bob Dible and Dukeshire.Waltermeier
would move along side Howey on severl ocassions, but Howey would hold him
off for the win.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, June 24 for Bauman
Auto Group Night with the 410 sprints, 305 sprints and dirt trucks. Gates
open at 4:30 p.m. with racing set to get underway at 7:30 p.m. For ticket
