Mark
Keegan scores 55th career Fremont win; Brock Mayes wins
second of season; Roepke takes third checkered
By Brian
Liskai
FREMONT,
Ohio (June 29, 2002) - Fremont's Mark Keegan redeemed himself
Saturday at Fremont Speedway. Keegan, a nine-time track
champion at "The Track That Action Built," passed
early leader Mike Linder nearly halfway into the 30-lap
main and held on for the victory, his 55th career win at
Fremont, moving him into fourth place on the all-time feature
win list.
Keegan
looked like he's score the win a week ago, made contact
with Shawn Chaney on the last lap and spun to finish sixth.
However, on Baumann Automotive Group Night, Keegan picked
his way through lapped traffic like a true veteran for the
victory in his Steinbreck Motorsports #92.
"What
a great win for this team. We turned over last night (Friday
at Attica Raceway Park) and they worked really hard to get
us back together. To come back here and get the win...wow,"
said Keegan. "Last week hurt. Shawn Chaney is going
to be a great race car driver, but we thought we had them
covered. This is a great way to get momentum into speedweek."
"That
was fun racing with Mike Linder...he grew up watching me
and his dad battle for many wins here. And to have Jim Linder
(third on the all-time career feature win list) start on
the pole...it was just a special night," added Keegan.
Defending
track champion John Ivy of Fremont took second on the last
lap, with Linder holding on for third, Byron Reed fourth
and Alvin Roepke of Elmore rounding out the top five.
In the
305 sprint feature, Brock Mayes of Bucyrus moved up steadily
through the field from his 11th starting spot, and dueled
with Jamie Miller of Fostoria for several laps. On a restart,
Mayes found the high side of the track to his liking and
took his second win of the 2002 season at Fremont over Miller,
Fostoria's Bill Kraylek; Castalia's Bryan Scott; and Fremont's
Ryan Lowe.
The
dirt truck feature was a dandy, as Woodville's Danny Roepke
literally edged Fremont's John Rhoads by a bumper for his
third win of the season. Third went to Fremont's Jeff Dougherty,
with Carey's Rob Boutwell fourth and Fremont's Bobby Davis
rounding out the top five.
Thanks
to sponsorship from the Baumann Automotive Group, two cars
were added to the A-main features in all three divisions
Saturday.
Fremont
Speedway will be back in action on Tuesday, July 2 for the
third leg of the All Star Circuit of Champions Ohio Sprint
Speedweek. The Track That Action Build will also host the
fifth leg of the tour on Thursday, July 4. Both night's
features pay $6,000 to win and $500 to start thanks to Budweiser
and Miller beers.
