Ivy takes win away from cousin Brian Smith at Fremont; Bryan Scott leads last 10 feet for win

By Brian Liskai

FREMONT, Ohio (June 15) - It was a bitter sweet victory for Fremont's John Ivy Saturday at Fremont Speedway. The defending track champion passed his cousin Brian Smith of Fremont with five laps to go in the 30-lap Coors Beer A-Main and went on to post his third win of the 2002 season.

"The middle of the track opened up for me and I was able to get a run on Brian and take the lead. I hated to pass him. He worked very hard to try and win his first career feature, but my crew had the car hooked up in the middle of the track and I was able to get around him," said Ivy. "My wing slider broke and my wing went all the way forward...I don't know if that was a good thing or bad. It must have been good because we're in victory lane."

"That was a lot of fun. Boy, I thought we had it," said Smith. "We have won a lot of heat races this year, but struggled in the feature. This feels really good...if I had to lose, I'm happy it was to cousin John."

Rookie Shawn Chaney of Fremont raced his way into a career best third place finish. "Wow, I was racing with Mark Keegan who has tons of feature wins here... and I'm only in my third year of racing a sprint car (two previous seasons in the 305 sprints)," he said.

Mark Keegan of Fremont finished fourth, with Fremont's David Harrison rounding out the top five. Mike Linder of Fremont charged from 15th starting position to finish sixth, with Bobby Clark of Fremont seventh, Jim Linder of Fremont eighth, Todd Heller of Whitehouse, Ohio, ninth, and Elmore's Alvin Roepke 10th.

Defending track champion Bryan Scott didn't lead a lap in the 305 sprint A-Main, but was leading when it counted - the last 10 feet - to post his third feature win of the season at Fremont. Scott, of Castalia, was able to sneak around early leader Chad Laux of Norwalk for the victory. Behind Scott and Laux was Bobby Foster of Fremont, Brandon Martin of Attica, Matt Karbler of Castalia finished fifth, followed by Fremont's Jerrid Potter, Bucyrus' Brock Mayes, Fostoria's Jamie Miller, Gibsonburg's Roger Shammo, and Fostoria's Scott Kraylek rounded out the top 10.

"I though we'd have to settle for third. Then I was able to get around Bobby
(Foster) and the bottom opened up out of the last turn and I was able to sneak in for the win," said Scott. "That was good clean racing with Chad and Bobby."

Steve Sabo of Fremont picked up his second feature win of the seaon in the dirt trucks, with Jeff Doughtery of Fremont second; Dan Roepke of Woodville third; Bob Dible of Fostoria fourth; and Jay Boyd of Findlay completing the top five.

Fremont Speedway will be back in action Thursday night for the second leg of the Buckeye Nationals with the USAC non-wing sprints and midgets in action. The United States Auto Club has not competed at "The Track That Action" built in 21 years.
