Reed, Scott, Roepke heat up cold night at Fremont

By Brian Liskai

Fremont, Ohio (May 18) - With nearly all area race tracks raining out, Fremont Speedway's pits were jammed with 51 super sprints Saturday night. Monclova, Ohio's Byron Reed heated up the chilly night by posting his first feature win of the 2002 season. Defending track champion Bryan Scott picked up his first feature win at Fremont for 2002 in the 305 sprints, with Danny Roepke picking up the win in the dirt truck main.

Reed lead all 30 laps of the Fremont Fence 410 sprint feature, surviving two reds (David Harrison on lap two and Shawn Chaney and Butch Schroeder on lap 26. Behind Reed on the super fast track at the checkered was a hard-charging Shane Stewart, who started 15th, Chad Kemenah, up from eighth, Rob Chaney and Travis Rilat, who started 16th.

"I want to thank Jim Ford (Fremont promoter) for racing tonight. You fans are great...you are real die-hards to be out here supporting us in this cold," said Reed standing beside his Reebar Diecasting sprinter. "The track was a little too fast tonight...it made it hard to pass. We've struggled this year and crashed a few times. Hopefully this will get us going for next week when the All Stars come to Fremont."

In the 305 sprint A-main, Bryan Scott led all 25 laps, but nearly got taken out with a lap to go by a lapped car. Behind Scott at the checkered were Matt Karbler, Scott Kraylek, Dave Saxer and Dustin Keegan.

In the dirt trucks, 2000 track champion Dan Roepke worked his way to the front from sixth starting spot to score the win over early leader Rob Boutwell, Jay Boyd, Bruce Beard and Jeff Dougherty.

Memorial Day weekend will be a busy one for "The Track That Action Built," with the All Star Circuit of Champions making their 2002 debut at Fremont, on Saturday, May 25, with the Budweiser 40 paying $6,000 to win and $500 to start the 410 A-main.
