Mintz claims first
Fremont win Bryan Scott wins 305 feature
Bobby Davis wins second
straight in trucks
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio (Saturday, June 25, 205) - Craig Mintz grew up watching
his heroes race at Fremont Speedway. On Saturday, the 19-year-old Gibsonburg
native stood in their footsteps as he claimed his first ever 410 sprint
victory at "The Track That Action Built" on Burger King/Snyder's Floor
Covering Mid-Season Championship Night.
"This is just awesome...I've dreamed of this moment since I was a little
kid," said Mintz beside his Sabo racing #8s. "I have to thank Soup and
Beth Sabo for giving me everything to race with. I want to thank my Dad
(Les) and Mom (Lynn)...they made so many sacrifices to get me to where
I am today. I have to thank my entire crew...they didn't give up on me
even during the tough times."
Clyde's Bryan Scott passed Bellevue's Jeremy Durst on lap 10 of the
25-lap 305 sprint main and went on to score his 20th career Fremont victory.
Fremont's Bobby Davis made it two feature wins in a row in the Coors
Light Dirt Trucks.
Mintz jumped into the lead of the 30-lap feature from his pole starting
position, with Chad Blonde in tow. Lee Jacobs shot into second a lap later
from his fourth starting spot and he and Mintz pulled away from the rest
of the pack. A caution on lap four saw the running order of Mintz, Jacbos,
fast qualifier Byron Reed, Blonde, Bobby Clark, Brandon Martin and John
Ivy.
When the green flew again, Mintz put his Keller Chevrolet, Schiets
Motors, sprinter back in the lead, and he and Jacobs pulled away again.
Jacobs closed on Mintz' bumper by lap 12 as the duo hit lapped traffic. Then
Ivy started to make his move, getting around Jacobs into second on lap
21. Mintz was picking his way through lapped traffic when he nudged Caleb
Griffith, causing him to spin in turn two with three laps to go.
The fans were on their feet as Mintz led them to the stand for the
restart, wondering if the youngster could hold off the 2004 Fremont Speedway
champion of Ivy. Mintz seemed to get faster those last three laps and picked
up the win over Ivy, Clark, Jacobs, Reed, Martin, Troy Vacarro, Brian Smith,
Andrew Palker and Mark Keegan.
"I looked at th scoreboard on that last restart and saw a five and
knew it had to either be John Ivy or Byron Reed...either way I knew I had
to concentrate on hitting my marks. If I did that I knew they couldn't
catch me," said Mintz. "I also want to dedicate this to Dick Liskai...I
know he's watching from up above. He helped get me into my first 305 sprint
car and gave me a lot of pointers."
In the 305 sprint feature, Durst and Stuart Brubaker swapped the lead
back and forth the first handful of laps, while eighth starting Scott worked
up to third place. A caution on lap eight saw Durst leading Scott, Brad
Bowman and Brubaker. Scott made his move on lap 10 and cruised to the win
over Durst, Andy Shammo, Bobby Foster (up from 14th), Daniel Smith, Scott
Kraylek, Matt Merrill, Roger Shammo, Willie Keegan and Mark Lang.
"We've been so close this year to winning one...this feels great to
be back on the front stretch," said Scott beside his Rich Farmer/Tim Everett
#37z. "I have to thank Burns Iron and Metal and Fremont Auto Parts for
their sponsorship help and all our great sponsors. I feel very lucky to
be a part of this team. Rich and Tom put so much time and money into this
deal."
In the Coors Light Dirt Trucks, Davis had to hold off a hard-charging
Jim McGrath to take the checkered. Ron Kepling finished third followed
by Dan Roepke, Brian Arnold (up from 18th), Steve Endicott, Eric DeVanna,
Art Howey Jr., Ralph Willey and Jim Welty.
"Wow, Jim McGrath has that truck working well...he gave me all I could
handle," said an exhausted Davis beside his Smith Automotive, Crown Battery,
Jenni's Cooper Penny truck. "I've really found something on the bottom
of this place. I knew if I just held my composure I'd be alright at the
end."
Fremont Speedway will be back in action on Thursday, June 30 for leg
five of the All Star Ohio Sprint Speedweek. Also, on Sunday, July 3, the
Coors Light Dirt Trucks will run for $1,000 to win on Henry Motorsports
Night, along with the UUI Limited Late Models, the ladies' Powder Puff
truck race and the school bus action.
