Sabo scores 3rd
win of season
during Sandusky County
Fair
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio (Aug. 24, 2004) - Steve
Sabo has won the majority of his features at Fremont Speedway running the
bottom groove. However, on the biggest night of the year for the Coors
Light Dirt Trucks, he took to the high side of the clay oval and powered
to his 20th career feature win during the 152nd Sandusky County Fair.
"Mark Keegan (driver of the 410 sprinter #X) told me to try the high
side and the truck just seemed to work good up there," said Sabo beside
his Sabo Race Trucks/Smith Automotive truck. "I knew Brian Arnold had a
strong truck and if I could get around him we'd be alright. The motor started
to stutter there at the end, but we hung on."
Sabo survived numerous caution flags in the 20-lap affair that paid
$500 to win thanks to Henry Motorcar/Motorsports and Ross' Lawn Care. At
the drop of the green, Arnold took the lead and raced side by side with
Sabo for several laps. In fact, Sabo got around him once, but the move
was nullified by a caution. Sabo finally motor around Arnold on lap 10
and went on to score the win.
Sabo now is tied for 19th on Fremont Speedway's all-time career feature
win list with Paul Strasser with 20 victories.
Arnold, who has four feature wins on asphalt at Sandusky Speedway this
season, came home second, Fostoria's Bob Dible was third; Lindsay's Steve
Rando was fourth; Gibsonburg's Andy Maynard was fifth; Rex Wright came
from 22nd to sixth; Mark Warnick was seventh; Brian Michael earned the
hard charger award for coming from 24th to eighth; Jim Welty finished ninth;
and Jason Fought rounded out the top 10.
Thirteen trucks broke the track record during qualifying, with Fremont's
Art Howey Jr. timing quickest at 18.10 seconds, earning a pair of race
gloves compliments of the Last Lap Radio Show.
Henry Motorcar/Motorsports awarded race shoes or gloves to the heat
race winners which went to Arnold, Sabo, Paul Dymond, Rex Wright, Joe Hartlaub,
and Rando.
Twenty-six ladies got behind the wheel of the Coors Light Dirt Trucks
for a 15-lap Powder Puff race dubbed the Queens Royal sponsored by the
Henhouse, ABC Detailing and Ross Lawn Care. Also. McDuff Signs posted a
$50 bonus to the lady who passed the most trucks during the race.
The Queens Royal turned out to be a rumble, with Terri Harrison, wife
of 410 sprint driver David Harrison, and Kathy Rando racing side by side,
splitting lapped traffic and rubbing wheels for the win. At the checkered,
Harrison, driving Brian Arnold's truck, took the win with Rando, driving
Steve Rando's truck, finishing a close second, and Marcy "Bubbles" Baker
drove Rick Potts truck from the tail to third for the hard charger award.
Fourth went to Becky Dible who drove Bob Dible's truck, with Jenny Spitler
driving Dave Gibbs truck coming home fifth.
"I've been looking forward to this since Terri Scott began talking about
it. I have to thank Brian Arnold for allowing me to drive his truck and
to Terri Scott for putting this deal together. It was a blast. Kathy is
a heck of a racer," said Harrison, who was presented her trophy from trophy
king Mike Linder (driver of the #3 410 sprinter).
