Scott Miller Holds
Off Sebetto For Richest 305 Sprint Win In Nation
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio (Aug. 29, 2003) - Scott Miller held off Bryan Sebetto
and a
hard charging Bryan Scott to claim the Baumann Auto Group 305 Sprint
Invitational at Fremont Speedway Friday night. The win was worth $2,500
the
richest top prize in the country for the econo-sprint division.
"We've been so close to winning all year, but we have had to start so
far
back. We got to qualify tonight which got us up front to start and
that
helps," said Miller, who drives the JD Automotive sprinter. "I want
to
dedicate this win to Jimmy Deel...I worked with him and he was a great
guy.
The Deel family gave me a great race car."
"I won a $2,000 show in a 410 sprint awhile back...so this is the biggest
race I've ever won. I want to thank Baumanns for sponsoring this race
and
Jim Ford for making the 305 sprints the top class with a special race
like
this," Miller added.
Jim Deel was killed in a sprint car crash at Fremont two years ago,
and his
family owns the car Miller drove to victory.
Josh Hill led the first six laps of the 30-lap affair from his pole
position. Miller took the lead on lap 6 and was cruising until he
encountered lapped traffic. That put Sebetto on his bumper and the
two raced
side by side for several laps. A restart with about five laps remaining
bunched up the field and as the green replaced the yellow, Miller moved
to
the top groove with Sebetto running the middle. Meanwhile, defending
305
sprint track champion Scott was working his way up from his 12th starting
spot and moved right on the bumper of Miller and Sebetto as they took
the
white flag. The trio raced nose to tail down the back stretch,
with Sebetto
getting beside Miller through turns three and four. Miller rocketed
off the
cushion and took the win.
"I ran that thing as hard as I could. I could get beside him but didn't
have
enough to pull in front," said a disappointed Sebetto. "Second's alright,
but it's the first loser."
Scott, who was driving the car Craig Mintz nearly won the invitational
in
last year, was pleased with his effort.
"Les and Craig called me a couple of nights ago about this ride. We
worked
on it all week and didn't fire the motor until last night. It took
me awhile
to knock the mothballs off, but once we all got on the same page in
terms of
set-up, we were fast. That was a lot of fun," said Scott.
Behind Miller, Sebetto and Scott at the checkered were Chris Lang, Caleb
Griffith, Jamie Miller, Willie Keegan, Joe Laugherty, Roger Shammo
and A.J.
Sleek.
Willie Keegan earned $200 from the Last Lap Radio Show for setting a
new
track record during qualification. Also, Sleek and Miller earned $100
for
picking up heat race wins thanks to Gressman Powersports because their
cars
had the company's power plants under the hood. Gressman also paid $50
to
heat race winners Mike Riehl, Chad Laux and Mark Whaley.
Picking up the Progress Plastic Products B-main win was Shammo, who
also
received $50 from Gressman Powersports. Winning the Little Tavern on
the
Prairie B-main was Caleb Griffith who picked up an extra $25 from Gressman
Powersports. Also, Chad Laux picked up an extra $300 from KOT Trucking
as
the Don Eckhardt Memorial Hard Charger by passing 10 cars from his
last
starting spot to finish 12th.
At the start of the feature, driver Keith Whaley paced the field to
honor he
and brother Mark's mother who is battling cancer. Up until last week
she had
not missed a race since 1963.
The dirt truck feature was another barn-burner, with Bobby Davis, Greg
Summit and Danny Roepke all making contact coming down for the checkered
flag, with Summitt taking his third win of the season by a bumper.
Roepke
was second followed by Davis, Rex Wright and Bob Dible.
In their first ever appearance at Fremont Speedway, the limited late
models
put on a good show, with Bucyrus' Jim Gingery taking the win over Rick
Moore, Bill Clapp Sr., Jason Hinton and Chester Fitch.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 6 with the richest
ever payoff in the track history. The winner of the All Star Circuit
of
Champions 50-lap A-main will take home $10,000.
