Roepke by Inches,
Last lap for Lang, Sabo Wins his 16th at Fremont Speedway
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio (Aug. 9, 2003) - Alvin Roepke got under David Harrison
coming out of turn four on the last lap to score his second straight feature
win in the 410 sprints at Fremont Speedway on Trans Health Care Night.
"Wow! I can't believe we came from that far back to win. When I got
around Brock (Mayes) I thought I had the lead, but then I got thinking
'David started on the front row, he's got to be up there.' I just kept
my line and then I saw him with about two to go up in the black stuff sliding
around...I knew if I stayed on the bottom I might have a chance," said
an excited Roepke in victory lane. "He slid up in turn four and I got a
great bite off the bottom. My guys had this car so perfect...I'm just the
lucky guy who gets to drive it because it's fast."
Harrison, who hails from Fremont, jumped into the lead from his outside
front row starting spot and set sail. He held a half track lead by the
halfway point. Meanwhile, Roepke - aboard his Mt. Dew/PMI Metals sponsored
sprinter - was steadily working his way up from his 12th starting position.
He passed rookie Brock Mayes with nine laps to go and began closing the
gap to Harrison. Harrison - driving the Crown Battery, Snyder's Floor Covering
sprinter, had a two car advantage as the white flag was shown, setting
up the dramatic pass for the win in the non-stop 30 lapper.
Mayes finished third, followed by Gibsonburg's Craig Mintz (up from
10th) and Fremont's John Ivy (up from 14th).
The 305 sprint A-main was just as exciting, as pole-sitter Barry Cole,
a rookie from Arcadia, took the early lead. Bascom, Ohio's Chris Lang trailed
Cole through the entire race, with the two racing side by side coming down
for the white flag. Lang took the lead with a low move off of turn two
and held on for his first career Fremont victory.
"Boy this feels good. We've struggled this year...blowing up two engines
and destroying a race car," said Lang. "Finally, we get to end our night
on the front stretch."
The dirt truck A-Main saw an early three-way battle for the lead between
Fostoria's Bob Dible, Lindsay's Steve Rando and Fremont's Bobby Davis.
However, it was defending track champion Steve Sabo's consistent ride around
the bottom of the track that prevailed, as he took the lead just prior
to the halfway mark of the 15-lap event. Sabo and Davis raced door to door
for the last half of the race, with Sabo ending Davis for the victory,
his 16th career win at Fremont.
"I like it when the track gets a little slick. We set this thing up
to run the bottom and it worked perfectly. That was fun racing with Bobby
side by side, lap after lap. He raced me clean and it was exciting," said
Sabo.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action on Tuesday, Aug. 19, during
the Sandusky County Fair, with the dirt trucks in action on Henry Motorsports
Night. There will be no racing on Saturday, Aug. 16, or Saturday, Aug.
23
due to the fair. The 305 sprints will be the main attraction on Friday,
Aug. 29 for the Baumann Auto Group Invitational. The 410 sprints return
on Saturday, Sept. 6 with the $10,000 to win All Star Circuit of Champions
Night.
