Blaney Scores Exciting
Late Race Win Over Kemenah at Fremont
By Scott Hall
FREMONT, OH - Dale Blaney made it three different winners in three Ohio
Speedweek races Tuesday night at Fremont Speedway in the Haulmark All Star
sprint car 40 lap feature. Blaney's $5,000 win was his fifth career Ohio
Speedweek win and his thrilling pass of Chad Kemenah in heavy lapped traffic
on lap 38 sealed the win. Blaney's Fisher-powered Andrews Motorsports Maxim
was on Hoosier Tires.
"The longer the race went the better I was getting off
turn two. I just didn't want to spin the tires and seal one up," the winner
said, revealing his race strategy. "George Fisher and Fritz Andrews had
the car great. I'm awful glad to get a win this week."
Kemenah started from the pole and began stretching out
a big lead over third starter Todd Kane. Meanwhile, sixth starting Blaney
was on the move and went low on the frontstretch to take second from Kane
on lap six as Kemenah held a quarter lap advantage. The leaders entered
lapped traffic by lap ten, allowing Blaney to close. Blaney was right on
Kemenah's bumper in traffic on lap 14 when Greg Wilson stopped on the front
chute with mechanical problems that ended his night.
For the restart it was Kemenah, Blaney, Kane, Jim Dayton,
Mike Wagner and high school student Craig Mintz. Kemenah pulled away from
Blaney when the green came back out as Mintz was on the move in the low
groove, taking over third within two laps. Kelly Kinser, who started tenth,
was also on the move and was up to fourth at the half way point of the
event behind Kemenah, Blaney and Mintz.
In lapped traffic again, Blaney was right on Kemenah's
bumper when Byron Reed stopped on the backstretch on lap 24 for another
caution. Blaney dove low to try and take the lead when the green came back
out, but Kemenah held him off as Kinser dove under Mintz for third. Kinser
began reeling in Blaney as Kemenah pushed out to a half straightaway advantage.
With eight laps to go Kemenah entered lapped traffic again, allowing Blaney
to close again. Each lap Blaney moved closer and closer, and on lap 37
was only a car length behind. He dove under Kemenah in lapped traffic to
take the lead a circuit later and Kinser also passed Kemenah on the white
flag lap to finish second.
"I though we had another one," Kemenah lamented after finishing
third. "Sometimes the lapped cars race the leader as hard as they race
someone else."
Mintz was a fine fourth after starting eighth, with Jason
Johnson finishing fifth after starting 19th. Kenny Jacobs drove a brand
new Pete Grove machine to sixth, followed by 13th starter Jeff Shepard,
Ryan Coniam, Rob Chaney and 16th starting Shane Stewart. The Crown Battery
heat fell to Stewart, the B&B Products heat went to Bobby Clark, the
Engler Machine and Tool heat was won by Lee Jacobs and the TP Wings heat
fell to Mark Keegan. Scott Kraylek won the Outerwears Pre-filters
C Main and Ryan Coniam won the United Aluminum Window Sales &
Consulting B Main. Kemenah captured the Haulmark Dash and Blaney was
the Huggins Cams Fast Time qualifier.
In the dirt truck feature, defending track champion Steve Sabo scored
his first feature win of the season over Jim Keegan, Bobby Davis, Andy
Maynard and Brian Arnold.
