Darland, Hines Claim USAC Buckeye National Wins At Fremont

By Brian Liskai

FREMONT, Ohio (June 19, 2003) - Someone finally found a way to beat J.J.
Yeley at Fremont Speedway.  Dave Darland made it two USAC feature wins in as
many nights with a victory in the midget feature, and Tracy Hines held Yeley
off to claim the sprint feature during the second night of the Buckeye
Nationals presented by Pepsi.

In the 30-lap USAC midget main, Darland took the lead from Nick Lundgreen on
lap 7 and held off a late race challenge by Bobby East to claim his second
midget feature in two nights (he won the midget feature Wednesday at Attica
Raceway Park). Yeley was running third, but spun out of turn four on the
last lap and settled for 15th. Coming into Thursday night's feature, Yeley
had raced in three feature events at Fremont, winning all three in 2002.

"The track was tricky tonight..you had to pick your way around the
corners...there were some wet spots and dry spots," said Darland of Lincoln,
Neb. "The Steve Lewis team gave me a great car and we're on a roll right
now."

Behind Darland were Brownsburg, Indiana's Bobby East, who took the USAC
midget points lead; New Castle, Indiana's Tracy Hines, who started 19th;
Ventura, California's Cory Kruseman; and Shane Cottle who started 17th.

The exciting 30-lap USAC sprint feature saw Campbell, California's Bud
Kaeding jump into the lead. Hines, who said he learned something about the
track in the midget feature, took over the top spot on lapy 13 and picked
his way expertly through lapped traffic. A yellow bunched the field up with
eight laps to go, with four lapped cars between Hines and Yeley, who started
10th. Yeley quickly disposed of the lapped machines and set his sights on
Hines. The two raced nose to tail for six laps, with Yeley pulling under
Hines as they took the white flag. Hines and Yeley raced side-by-side down
the backstretch on the last lap, with Hines taking the checkered a half a
car ahead of Yeley.

"Anytime you can beat J.J. you feel lucky...he's been winning everything,"
commented Hines on Yeley, who has won 13 USAC features so far in 2003. "The
crew of the Kroger, Tide, Pringles, Bounty Twister gave me a great race car.
Maybe this will put us on a roll...but it's tough every night with these
guys."

Behind Hines and Yeley at the checkered were Kaeding, Ludlow Falls, Ohio's
Matt Westfall (up from 17th; and Wooster, Ohio's Jac Haudenschild (up from
15th.

There will be no racing at Fremont Speedway this Saturday, but action will
resume on Saturday, June 28 with Beck Oil Night for the winged 410 sprints,
305 sprints and dirt trucks.
