Kemenah
Takes Burger King Loot; Mark Whaley Scores First Win
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio (June 14, 2003) - All Star Champion Chad Kemenah of Findlay,
Ohio, was patient and took the lead with five laps left and held on
to the
win at Fremont Speedway on Burger King Night. Port Clinton's Mark Whaley
held off challengers on numerous restarts and scored his first career
feature win in the 305 sprints. Wayne, Ohio's Dwight Waltermeier scored
his
first career feature win in the dirt trucks.
At the start of the 410 sprint feature, rookie Craig Mintz of Gibsonburg
jumped into the lead. He held the point through the halfway mark of
the
feature while fellow rookie Brock Mayes of Bucyrus gave chase. Mayes
took
the lead on lap 16 and pulled away while Kemenah worked his way into
third.
Kemenah was patient and passed Mintz with 10 to go. He followed Mayes
for
five laps, passing him out of turn four with just a handful of laps
remaining.
Kemenah road to the victory ahead of Jeff Shepard who made a late race
charge to the front, Mayes, Mintz and Greg Wilson.
"My wing slider broke at the beginning of the race and the wing was
moving
all over...I had my hands full," said Kemenah. "I just had to be patient
and
let the car work. My brother Brian gave me a great race car and Jim
Harble
and John Bores of Underground Utilities give me everything I need to
win
races."
"It's been awhile since I won a race...maybe my wife will be able to
live
with me for awhile," Kemenah joked. "This gives us some momentum going
into
speedweek."
Mark Whaley led all 25 laps of the 305 sprint feature, but it wasn't
easy.
Whaley had to endure several restarts for crashes and then had to hold
off a
last lap, turn four charge by Scott Miller to pick up his first ever
feature
win.
"This is fantastic...I never thought I'd be on the front stretch at
Fremont
Speeday," said an elated Whaley. "I have to thank my brother Keith...he's
not racing because he hurt his motor, and he gave me his power steering
to
use. He helped set the car up. My whole crew have worked hard and kept
their
faith in me...wow, I just can't believe I finally won a feature!"
Dwight Waltermeier looked like he would win his first feature last week
at
Fremont, but had to settle for second. He was not to be denied this
Saturday, as he picked his way up from his fifth starting spot to hold
on
for the victory in only his second season of racing.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Thursday night with Pepsi presents
the second leg of the Buckeye Nationals featuring the non-wing USAC
sprints
and midgets.
