Reed
Takes Advantage of Rookie Mistake To Win Fremont
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio (April 19, 2003) - It looked like 410 sprint rookie Brock
Mayes would score an upset to open Fremont Speedway's 52nd season, but
the youngster from Bucyrus, made a mistake on a lap 21 restart, and Byron
Reed took full advantage to claim the Snyder's Floor Covering A-main victory.
"Brock will be tough this year...he certainly had the car to beat. My
car felt like junk all night, but it was good enough to get us in victory
lane," said Reed, driver of the Reebar Die Casting sprinter. "There was
a big hole in turn one and I had to race through it or I wasn't going to
win."
Mayes, who moved from the 305 sprint division into the top sprint car
class this year, jumped into the lead from his outside front row start.
A Brandon Martin flip in turn one of the start halted action, and resulted
in moving Reed from 10th starting spot up two rows to sixth on the restart.
Mayes pulled away on the restart and was flying around the tacky oval
until a lap 20 yellow. On the restart, Mayes stomped on the gas out of
four and his car wheelied, letting Reed, Danny Smith and Alvin Roepke get
around. Reed then set sail as the battle was on for second between Smith,
Roepke and 14th starting John Ivy. The man on the move was Craig Keel from
Weevesport, N.Y., as he started 20 and was up to sixth.
At the checkered it was Reed over Smith, Roepke, Ivy, Keel, Mayes, David
Harrison (up from 19th), Troy Vacarro, Jason Dukes and Todd Heller (up
from 23rd).
In the 305 sprints, Andy Shammo scored his second win of the weekend
(he won Friday at Attica Raceway Park) aboard the Burkin Custom Trailers
sprinter. Shammo, from Gibsonburg, started 5th in the A. Behind him at
the checkered was Norwalk's Chad Laux, Fostoria's Jamie Miller, Castalia's
Matt Karbler and Fremont's Ryan Lowe.
In the crash-filled Dirt Truck feature, last season's rookie of the
year, Steve Rando of Lindsey, scored his first career victory over Steve
Sabo, Bobby Davis, Rex Wright and Rich Farmer.
"America's Series - The All Star Circuit of Champions visits Fremont
Saturday, April 26, with the 305 sprints on the racing card.
