Discounts to attend Sunday's
non-wing racing at Fremont
Tuesday, July 27, 2010
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio – It’s getting
close to the end of the summer, and wallets are stretched thin. But thanks
to the cooperation of Fremont Speedway, Eldora Speedway, Waynesfield Motorsports
Park and KC Raceway, fans can still watch some great traditional (non-wing)
sprint car racing at a discounted price.
Race fans who bring their
ticket stubs from racing action at Waynesfield, K-C Raceway, Eldora Speedway
and Fremont Speedway from this coming weekend (Friday, July 30 through
Saturday, July 31) will get $2 off general admission prices at the races
on Sunday, Aug. 1 races at Fremont Speedway .
Sunday’s race at Fremont
Speedway is the sixth race of the special series of non-wing races that
lead up to the Second Annual Jack Hewitt Challenge to be run at Waynesfield
Motorsports Park with the Lane Automotive Michigan Traditional Sprints
on Saturday, Aug. 7. It is the second of a special double-header weekend
of racing at “The Track That Action Built,’ as the winged 410 and 305 sprints
and dirt trucks will be in action Saturday, July 31. On Sunday, the non-wing
sprints will be joined by the Fremont Fence Dirt Trucks battling the invading
stock cars.
The Hoosier Racing Tire series
culminates with the $4,000 to win Jack Hewitt Classic at Waynesfield on
Aug. 7. The special non-sanctioned series will include a stop at the famous
Eldora Speedway Saturday, July 31. The winner of the feature events at
both Eldora and Fremont will receive a guaranteed starting spot in the
Hewitt Classic A-main.
The traditional sprint car
series, sponsored by Hoosier Tire, has seen four races so far beginning
in May at Gas City I-69 Speedway in Indiana with Travis Welpott taking
the win. The next stop was in June at Waynesfield with Matt Westfall getting
a hard fought win. Then on July 2, Gas City held the first of the four
Hewitt Classic qualifiers which not only counted for the series points,
but also guaranteed the winner a starting spot in the finale at Waynesfield.
Robert Ballou, “The Madman,” picked up the victory at Gas City, with Westfall
taking the Waynesfield race on July 3, locking both into the Hewitt Classic.
Sunday’s race at Fremont
was originally scheduled for Millstream Speedway in Findlay. However, promoter
Rich Farmer said the event was moved to Fremont due to work schedules and
time.
“The cooperation between
tracks in Ohio has never been greater. I really have to thank Eldora, KC
and Waynesfield…this just goes to show when we all work together, and with
the support of the fans and race teams, we can put on great entertainment
at an affordable price,” said Famer.
Prior to Sunday’s racing
at Fremont, the series will compete Saturday, July 31 at Eldora for a $2,000
to win affair. NAPA auto Parts is presenting the racing at Eldora which
also features the Fastrack Late Models.
On Saturday, the winged 410
and 305 sprints and dirt trucks will compete on Kistler Engines Night at
Fremont Speedway. Gates will open both nights at 4 p.m. with racing underway
at 7 p.m. |
Bryan Sebetto hangs on to
claim 410 sprint feature at Fremont; Zack Kramer wins rain-shortened 305
feature
Saturday, July 24, 2010
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio – Bryan Sebetto
isn’t a big man. But he was able to reach down and demand more from his
weary body Saturday, July 24, at Fremont Speedway, and held on to score
his second win of the year at “The Track That Action Built. Sebetto came
back from a hot lap miscue, where he dumped his Burmeister owned sprinter,
to take the victory on Beck Oil Night Presents the Mike Holman Memorial.
With nearly three inches
of rain falling on Fremont Speedway the preceding two days, it was a miracle
races even took place Saturday. But track crews worked hard on the surface
all day, though it was a challenging track for the drivers.
“I am freaking whooped. I’ll
tell you what, everyone was so fast even the lapped cars were just as fast…it
was hard to get through traffic. And then to drive through all the bumps
and stuff. I saw the five to go and I’m falling out of the seat and I counted
down and I knew the one to go was coming and I saw the camera lights were
flashing so I knew someone had to be close. So I’m yelling at myself that
whole last lap ‘don’t give up, don’t give up, don’t give up,” said Sebetto
in the Engine Pro Victory Lane.
“My hats off to Rich Farmer
(promoter) and the whole track crew. I know the track is rough, but with
all the rain we’ve gotten here they did absolutely the best job they possibly
could. I have to thank all the Burmeisters who work on this…we’ve had a
really rough year. I got upside in hot laps earlier tonight because the
driver’s an idiot. I have to thank all the sponsors, Kistler Engines, Stephen
Mapus Tools, Party Light Candles, JLH Construction, Burns Petroleum, Schiets
Motorsports, Kistler Racing Products and R&R Auto Wrecking,” added
Sebetto.
With lightening striking
in the background, it was a race of attrition for the Fremont Federal Credit
Union 305 Sprints as only five cars were left when an early checkered flag
flew due to rain.
Race-long leader D.J. Foos
got into the heavy cushion in turn 3 trying to hold off Zack Kramer and
Bobby Clark, apparently breaking something on his mount. As he tried to
drive down the front stretch there was something obviously broken on his
car as he slowed, collecting Stuart Brubaker just as Bobby Clark took the
lead, bringing out the caution. Reverting back to the last lap, with Foos
out the lead now belonged to Kramer, and that’s when a light rain began
to fall, causing the track to get slimy and ending the race on lap 16,
and giving the Fremont youngster his very first feature win.
The Fremont Fence Dirt Truck
A-main will be made up on Saturday, July 31 with double features for the
division along with a regular program for the Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410
Sprints and 305 sprints.
“This is unbelievable…it’s
about time. It was a rough race but it was fun. It was fast and demanding,”
said Kramer, as he talked to his car-owner, his grandfather Kenny Clark
on his cell phone. “I have to thank my grandpa for doing everything possible
to keep me racing. I’ve torn up quite a bit of stuff over the years. I
want to thank my grandma and all the guys who work on the car. I have to
thank B&L Plumbing, Fremont Fence, Jenny’s Copper Penny, Level Performance,
Jerry Zamora Roofing and Siding, and Kear’s Speed Shop especially.”
Brian Lay would grab the
early lead of the 410 sprint feature with Sebetto, Todd Heller, Lee Jacobs,
Chris Andrews, Phil Gressman and Dean Jacobs in tow. Sebetto would drive
around Lay the next circuit to take the lead on a lightening fast track.
Sebetto would tempt the cushion every lap as he hit the back of the field
by lap five. The lapped traffic would hold Sebetto up allowing Lay and
a fast-closing Lee Jacobs to close. With 10 laps in the books, Sebetto,
Lay and Jacobs waged a tremendous battle for the top spot.
Jacobs seemed to have the
faster machine, but on a tricky track and dealing with lapped machines,
made passing difficult. He moved into second at the flag stand as they
completed the 11th lap and drove in hard on the bottom of turn one and
caught a big berm trying to take the lead, ending his night.
On the restart, Sebetto had
a lapped machine between himself and Lay with fast-qualifier Dean Jacobs
third and Australian Steve Lines, who started ninth, up to fourth and on
the move. Dean Jacobs would drive under Lay on lap 16 to grab second and
a lap later the red would fly for a Jody Keegan tip-over. On the ensuing
restart, Sebetto would continue to tempt disaster as he ran on the ragged
edge with Jacobs in second as Lay slipped up the track allowing Lines and
Gressman to get by. Gressman would take third on lap 17, but Lines would
return the favor the next circuit.
Sebetto would again hit the
back
of the pack on lap 21, but Jacobs was unable to close as he was fighting
with Lines and Gressman. Sebetto had several close calls on the challenging
track, but was able to hang on for his 12th career victory over Dean Jacobs,
Lines, Gressman and Lay.

Traditional, non-wing sprint
racing returns to Fremont Speedway
Thursday, July 22, 2010
Contact: Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio – Traditional
sprint car racing – non-wing excitement – will return to Fremont Speedway
on Sunday, Aug. 1. The race was originally to take place at Millstream
Speedway in Findlay, Ohio, as part of the eight-race, non-sanctioned, non-wing
series, but will now take place at “The Track That Action Built.”
“We simply have too much
work to do at Millstream and not enough time to get it done so we’ve moved
it to Fremont,” said race promoter Rich Farmer.
Tracks that have participated
in the special non-sanctioned series include Eldora Speedway, Gas City
Speedway and Waynesfield Motorsports Park.
Prior to the Aug. 1 race
at Fremont, the series will race at Eldora Speedway on Saturday, July 31
for a $2,000 to win event and a guaranteed spot in the Second Annual Jack
Hewitt Classic to be contested at Waynesfield on Aug. 7. Sunday’s race
at “The Track That Action Built,” will pay $2,500 to win and a guaranteed
spot in the Hewitt Classic as well.
Thanks to Hoosier Tire, there
is a point fund for the series. The Hoosier DT3 right rear tire will be
incorporated in all of the series’ events.
The addition of the non-wing
race at Fremont will be part of a double-header weekend at the historical
speedway. On Saturday, July 31, the winged Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprints,
Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprints and Fremont Fence Dirt Trucks
will compete on Kistler Engines Night, which will also be a Kistler Racing
Products FAST (Fremont Attica Sprint Title) Championship series night for
the 410 sprints and a FAST night, presented by Kear’s Speed Shop and Cleveland
Golf, for the 305 sprints.
On Sunday, joining the non-wing
sprint cars will be the dirt trucks combined with the stock cars.
Gates will open both nights
at Fremont Speedway at 4 p.m. with racing underway at 7 p.m.

Fremont Speedway Hall of
Fame building project begins
Monday, July 12, 2010
Contact: Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio – Two years
ago the first class was inducted into the Fremont Speedway Hall of Fame.
Now work has officially begun to construct a facility to house the hall
of fame and other memorabilia associated with “The Track That Action Built.”
On Saturday, July 10, prior
to the night’s races at Fremont Speedway, a ground-breaking ceremony for
the Fremont Speedway Hall of Fame was held. Hall of fame inductees “Gentleman”
Johnny Auxter, who raced at the track’s first event 59 years ago, and De
Genzman, who won track championships at the track and currently owns a
sprint car that competes there weekly, turned the first shovels of dirt
for the facility.
The dream of a building at
the Sandusky County Fairgrounds became a reality when recently inducted
Genzman contributed $10,000 to the building project. Thanks to donations
from other hall of fame inductees and from the many loyal Fremont Speedway
fans, over $20,000 has been raised in just two years for the project.
“This dream of having a
building has come about a lot sooner than we anticipated thanks to the
generosity of De and Marilyn Genzman and all of the great race fans,” said
Hall of Fame Committee Co-Director Randy Mapus. “Fremont Speedway has been
an important part of the lives of many people and being able to construct
a building to house the hall of fame and other historical aspects of the
track will be great.”
Hall of Fame Committee Co-Director
Brian Liskai added that John Horn of JLH Company Contractors also played
a big part in moving the project forward.
“When John heard we were
working to build the facility, he stepped up and committed his company’s
resources to get the project going,” said Liskai.
The building will house not
only the plaques of the current 27 hall of fame inductees, but will have
many photo and video exhibits and even restored race cars and other items
significant to the 59 years “The Track That Action Built” has been around.
Plans include a souvenir shop as well. It will be located to the
east of the restroom facility, under the historic covered grandstands.
Both Liskai and Mapus expressed
their appreciation to Fremont Speedway Promoter Rich Farmer for his encouragement
and support of the Fremont Speedway Hall of Fame.
“Rich has continuously stepped
up to keep the project alive and moving forward, whether it’s financial
support or simply rolling up his sleeves and working on the project, he
has been there every step of the way,” added Mapus.
Current plans are to have
the building up by the end of the racing season in September (weather permitting),
with a grand-opening soon after.
“We still have a long way
to go in terms of finances. Funds will be needed to finish the interior
of the building and to operate it, but we’re confident the fans will continue
to support this important project,” said Liskai.
Fans can continue to support
the Fremont Speedway Hall of Fame – a registered non-profit organization
– by purchasing the hall of fame plaques that are available at the Action
Photos Booth at the track each week or by simply tossing in their spare
change at the Hall of Fame Wishing Well located under the grandstands.
Checks made out to the Fremont Speedway Hall of Fame – donations are tax
deductible – can be sent to Fremont Speedway, 2111 Hayes Ave., Fremont,
Ohio 43420 or contact Randy Mapus at mapus09@aol.com or Liskai at liskai2x@cros.net. |
Brandon Martin gets 1st
Fremont 410 sprint win; Weaver sweeps 305 double-header; Brooks get E-mod
win
Saturday, July 10, 2010
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio – Brandon Martin
has been so close to finding Fremont Speedway’s Engine Pro Victory Lane
over his 10-year 410 sprint car driving career, but it just didn’t come
to be. That all changed for the Attica, Ohio driver Saturday, July 10 on
Fisher Performance Night, as he took the lead with 10 laps to go and picked
his way through traffic for the win.
Fremont, Ohio’s Paul Weaver
dominated the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprints, winning the make-up
feature from Crown Battery Night that was rained out last month, and then
scoring the victory in the night’s regular feature event. Weaver, a two-time
track champion, has now won three features in 2010 to take his career total
to 28 at “The Track That Action Built,” good for 12th on the all-time win
list.
Wayne, Ohio’s John Brooks
waged a tremendous battle throughout the E-mod feature with Bill Keeler
before edging him for his second win of the year at Fremont.
Martin started third in
the Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprint feature and moved into second on
lap three. He caught Lee Jacobs by lap six with Dustin Daggett and Craig
Mintz right on their tails. Jacobs would hit lapped traffic by lap 11 as
Martin continued to pull along side of him on the bottom of turns three
and four. By lap 17, the crowd was on their feet watching a three-car battle
for the lead with Jacobs, Martin and Mintz putting on a show. With 10 laps
to go, Martin made his move, driving high in turn four to pass Jacobs for
the lead. Martin would pick his way through traffic and take the checkered
over Mintz, Lee Jacobs, Dale Blaney and Dean Jacobs
“I don’t know what to say…I’ve
never been up here before,” said Martin in the Engine Pro Victory Lane
beside his Martin Excavating and Trucking, Burns Electric, Eitle Machine,
Sacsteder & Worland Insurance backed #11. “It’s about damn time. I’ve
had a lot of great people behind me over these last 10 years…it’s been
a long 10 years. I hope the wins can start coming now.”
“My hats off to everyone
that works here every week and it’s great to have a nice crowd out here
tonight. There’s a lot of things people could be doing other than dirt
track racing so thanks for coming. I have to thank my crew…Guy Meyers started
helping us again and Dillon Thorton and I have a little buddy from Attica
come tonight and Ed Eitle, he’s been a big part of this team this year.
The Keegan family has helped me since I can’t remember. I have to thank
my parents…they’re not here and my wife’s at home. I just wasn’t expecting
this. We come to win every week and finally got it done. We’re going to
win some more though,” added Martin.
In the first 305 sprint
feature, Jimmy Colvin looked to make it two wins in a row, taking the early
lead over Dustin Dinan, Brad Bowman and Nate Dussel. The caution-filled
event would see only half the field racing at the end. Colvin would hit
lapped traffic by lap 10, but the race would grind to a halt on lap 11
when Dinan and Dussel would collide while battling for second, with both
ending up on their sides. Colvin would continue to lead with Zack Kramer,
Weaver, Bobby Clark and Stuart Brubaker in tow. Kramer would rocket off
the bottom of turn two to take the lead on lap 15, but it was short-lived,
as the caution would fly for debris on the track a lap later – the debris
being Kramer’s muffler, which sent him to the pits. Colvin was back in
the lead with Clark and Weaver right on his bumper. A lap later, Clark
would drive off the bottom of turn two into the lead with Weaver and Brubaker
getting around Colvin as well. With four laps to go, Clark’s run would
end when the motor let go in his #81, handing the lead to Weaver. Weaver
would pull away for the win over Brubaker, Colvin, John Ivy and Steve Rando.
“I thought I had a 12th place
car. It just worked out for us. I have to thank De Genzman, Level Performance
and my wife, Andrea for setting the car up,” said Weaver in the Engine
Pro Victory Lane beside his M&L Excavating, Schiets Motorsports backed
#1W.
In the 305 sprint feature
for Fisher Performance Night, it was Dinan who would grab the early lead
over Rando, Weaver, Colvin and Brubaker. Rando would drive into the lead
on lap 3, bringing Weaver into second. The action would grind to a stop
on lap four as Matt Merrill took a nasty flip on the front stretch (he
was uninjured). On the restart, Weaver would pull away while Rando, Dinan
and Brubaker waged a tremendous battle for second. Weaver hit lapped traffic
by the 10th circuit and picked his way through like a surgeon. Meanwhile,
Rando, Brubaker, Dinan and John Ivy were putting on a great show for second.
Ivy would lap up to the 11th place car as he took the checkered in a race
that only had one caution. Rando, Ivy, Brubaker and Brad Haudenschild would
round out the top five.
